32 GB sd card

Featured Replies

Just tried to up load new map data, 17.1GB, On to my shine new 32GB sd card and keep getting told that card is to small! And yes I did format it first.

Could it be that I downloaded the 'full download' am now having a go with the 18 individual segments to see if that works.

Are you trying to load a 17gb single file? If so then it won't copy if the drive is FAT32 format as the maximum sized files are 4GB.

If it's not that where did you buy the card from? If not a reputable seller "fake" cards are known to not have the full capacity despite appearing like there is the correct capacity - you only find out when trying to copy more to the drive than it can hold.

My computer has NTFS File system and sd card came direct from Amazon, not one of there partners.

Have 6 of the smaller downloads on the go at the moment with about 40 mins. to go so will see if this way works.

Tip - extract the zip file to a folder on your PC first and have a look at the file structure.

I posted how it should look here.

Then copy them all across to your card so that they are in the root of the card.

Does your card show as about 28Gb free space if you look at the properties before writing anything to it? And the card is unlocked so it is writeable?

Card is showing 29.7 GB of free space so plenty of room but the cards file system is FAT32. could this be my problem ?

Nope, as no single file is larger than 2Gb when you extract the archive.

Can you extract the archive fine on the PC and get the same file structure, sizes and number of files as I linked to? If not, you have a corrupted download.

Can you write anything to the card at all?

For Amundsen Skoda state

You need the SD-CDA card which is in your SKODA Auto Amundsen system.
This SD card is inserted in slot 2.
In order to ensure hassle-free map transfers, the SD-CDA card should only

contain navigation data

For Columbus

You will need an SD card with at least 32 GB of memory to update the naviga-
tion data. We recommend that you use a Class 10/SDHC card which is availa-

ble at regular retail networks

H2testw is a free bit of software that can check the capacity of a SD card

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/H2testw-Download-149366.html

It basically fills the card with random data to test capacity and also tells you read/write speed so you can see if your card is duff/fake

It is a problem if you are downloading the ZIP file directly to the drive

Found my problem its all me! as I said my new card was FAT32 and not NTFS so a hissing fit my computer had.

Looked up on help files and found how to convert file system using Command Prompt and now back on track should be all done in half hours time.

Going out for the day tomorrow so will upload file to my Columbus then.

Thanks for all your help and happy Skoda'ing.

Your new card being FAT32 is not the issue, I have updated my Columbus maps 3 times and my card is FAT32.

Downloaded maps from hard drive to sd card.

Both card and hard drive are know NTFS and reading up on file systems NTFS can handle bigger files than FAT32 Systems.

Imho a FAT32 System cannot handle a file of 17GB in one go so converting my sd card to NTFS did the trick.

Thanks again all.

What Andyvee is saying is none of the files are over 2GB, so they don't breach the 4GB file size limit of FAT32 file format.

So FAT32 is fine.

But you don't copy the 17Gb zip file to your card!

You extract it first, and then you end up with the file structure I linked to earlier in this thread.

Yeah - 4GB limit - I may have said 2Gb for some reason (maybe because that is the max partition size on FAT16??)

News update.

Columbus cannot find my find map files on my sd card!!!!

Is this down to them being in NTFS and not FAT32 file system.

Bring back my Garmim plug it into laptop and away you go.

Question for lord god sir VW. when will he let us plug a laptop or smartphone into the car and update that way then you will only get the bits of map that have changed and not have to download the lot from scratch as there computer at his end could see what you had ?.

Yes, I believe it needs to be FAT32.

You have been advised in earlier posts to extract the downloaded file onto your SD card, have you done this, or have you copied the downloaded file onto the SD card?

Still waiting for my car, but guessing it may not have the latest maps ( Amundsen) as it's a pre-build. I have downloaded the latest just in case.. Beats pacing the floor.

I have been searching this site plus the net and cannot find the definitive answers for my questions. Are the installed maps just UK or UK with main roads in Europe or full. If not full are other maps available to download, are they also free. The manual I downloaded states you must use the original SD card, is this the case as I would rather keep this and use another rather than risk loosing everything if something goes wrong.

I have transfered my Columbus download onto my 32GB fat32 USB stick this evening with no problems.

As I understand it, you can't use a USB stick to do the update - only an SD card.

Yes, I believe it needs to be FAT32.

It will work with NTFS as well, but the problem here is that the zip file has not been extracted.

Use 7zip to extract the file you downloaded to a folder on your PC. Then copy the contents of that folder to your card.

It will work with NTFS as well, but the problem here is that the zip file has not been extracted.

Ah, right gotcha. My bad!

Pretty sure someone has upgraded the Columbus maps from both USB stick and USB HDD.

If that's the case, excellent - saves me forking out for a big SD card...
