Are the 105pd engines ok

I'm thinking about one but been reading that they're not that much use compared to the tdi 140 because of the size/weight of the car....I guess if that's the case, a remap's the answer.....or is 105 liveable

I have a PD105 in my car.

 

Love it.

 

Recently went to Germany with 4 adults and the boot full.

 

Still pulled very well. Was whizzing along at one point then looked down to see 120mph on the clock.

 

Still got a calculated 47.7mpg on the trip.

 

A lost of people say they are underpowered but I don't agree.

 

The only difference is that ours is a DSG. I've never driven a manual PD105 so no idea how different it is to a DSG gearing wise etc.

I remember getting an Octy 1.9 with the 105 as a curtsey car.

 

Bearing in mind I was gong from a 200hp VRS I found the 105hp perfectly usable.

Don't expect a rocket ship and it's fine, you can make decent progress in it and it's a nice lazy engine to drive in a relaxed way.

 

But you'd better try before you buy.

Dads got a 105 pd 1.9 vw transporter and its not bad at all. Its not exactly quick but its torquey at low revs (a lot better to drive than the transit 140 sport my old boss had). Its not exactly quick, probably about as good accelerating as my 1.2htp fabia, but of course the vans heavier and about as aerodynamic as a brick.

Hes had an 07 plate passat with the pd140 engine in. That was good, was quick enough but was pretty noisey tbh, and used oil to he extent that he carried 2 litre bottles in the drivers door at all times.

The cr140 engine is much better though. Had that in a 2010 golf sportline. Seemed a lot faster than the passat. Booted it from the toll gates chasing a 3.0tdi audi a6 once, and with the dsg in the golf flicking through the gears, he wasnt really pulling away much.

Its a much more quiet and refined engine too, and barely used any oil. The cr140 is the one to go for IMO.

My vRoomster is (well, was) a PD105, has been great, even now running circa 150bhp and PD150 injectors it great having just ticked over 91k miles today.

But is it just the injectors n mapping thats different on the pd105 to the pd130?

I loved my 105bhp Octy before. Great engine and plenty of power when you want it. Also very economical too. Had it for 7 years and I miss it. Love that PD punch power :)

In terms of the 1.9 TDI unit, in 105bhp guise it's probably the best diesel engine available in VAG cars today, when balancing the often opposing traits of reliability, durability & economy.

I had one in a 57 plate Passat - felt just fine.  Not as 'savage' in the acceleration stakes as the (older) fabled 130bhp version, but more than up to the task of punting down motorways all day long.

Its also not available in new cars any more. The last I think are 60 plate Fabias/Octavias.

Ah that will be the old TDI. It's the non-PD one. Definitely not compatible.

I've had a few 105pd engines in various cars eg A3,Leon and wife's Golf and for my money it's the best modern engine VAG have produced. Maybe we have been lucky but NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER over 10s of thousands of miles.

They pull well and, in my opinion, are not as unrefined as people like to make out. Beats the 2.0pd engine I had in a Jetta on all but outright performance and mpg miles better!

As Phil says bigger injectors (PD150 are "plug and play") and bigger turbo for more than 150bhp.

I've heard unsubstantiated rumours that the PD160 turbo from an Ibiza Cupra is compatible...... ;)

The turbo and exhaust manifold on the 105 are all one unit unlike most of the other variants of PD engine where they are 2 separate items. I'm also surprised how tiny the port is from the compressor side.

The 90 is fine, it's just older and non pd. it's an efficient and hard wearing engine.

How much are you looking to spend as I am guessing not much for an octy mk 1 with a tdi 90 in.

My dad had a 110 TDI and it was pretty flat in it's power delivery and much noisier than the PD even.

 

Plus is was thirstier than the PD engines.

 

The gearing I think meant it had to rev higher at cruising speed.

My BKC 105 sounds like a tractor, is flat as a witch's tit and I feel is just too small an output for a Octavia estate which seems quite heavy, even empty.

Assuming it's mechanically identical to its higher power counterparts it should last long enough despite being floored all the time since it's effectively over engineered... or are the others over powered?

It is 'fine' but that's about it.

That doesn't sound right. The estate isn't that much heavier than the hatchback tbh. As I mentioned above ours still pulled very well with a lot of weight in.

 

They are perfectly happy with being floored all the time as long as it's not from cold and that they're not thrashed to within an inch of their life. Getting them revved up now and then keeps the turbo etc running well.

I found it much noisier than our PD130 at the time and now the PD105. Much louder 'gruff' kind of tone to it.

 

You could be right on the weight there. It was in a VW Sharan and I had been used to a Seat Cordoba PD130 with the older long ratio gearbox.

 

I do remember what the revs were like at 70-80 mph though... awful. We once nearly borrowed it to go to Germany in but realised it wasn't really up to fast Autobahn cruising.

I was shocked to feel how heavy the removable boot floor was, that got slung into storage straight away.

I guess I should have got a VRS for a more spirited drive, I must have had a senior moment, coming from a motorcycling past.

Other than not being able to run it on SVO @ 80p/Lt it does the job of plodding along with Joe average and I even managed to average an indicated 59mpg on a 75mile trip last week, usually it's in the forties due to short trips and booting it.

Your car weighs 1515kg. Should do 0-60 in about 11.5 seconds.

 

With mine being the DSG it weighs 1540kg and 0-60 in about 11.8 seconds. Not once has it felt slow or underpowered.

 

I'd be tempted to check yours out if it really is that bad.
