Are the 105pd engines ok

Featured Replies

It is 'fine' but that's about it.

My dad had a 110 TDI and it was pretty flat in it's power delivery and much noisier than the PD even.

Plus is was thirstier than the PD engines.

The gearing I think meant it had to rev higher at cruising speed.

 The ASV 110 is a fine enough engine, it'll pull from 50-80 on the motorway with surprising vigor, probably not that sharp off the line but then I don't suppose that was ever meant to be the case. Its good for 55+ mpg and its refined enough on long journeys. Commute sixty miles per day in mine and am still surprised by its abilities given it is 14 years old with knocking on 150k on it.

@Phil-E

It performs as per book spec, it just seems deceptively slow and I am used to a bit more shove.

I couldn't care less re top speed, I've been banned once (on two wheels) and not looking to repeat the experience but acceleration is what I miss for making good progress on twisty roads with the slow brigade and farm traffic.

I'll just have to keep my eyes open for a nippier wagon.

Like I said before I've not driven a manual PD105 only our DSG.

With the DSG it's very easy to pick up speed due to just being able to step on the gas and get an instant down-change.

The book figures are also pretty different to the real world feal IMO.

I can still get off the line quicker than most people due to the quick changes and have plenty of power for overtaking.

It may just be you are used to more power... although we came from a Seat Cordoba PD130 which was quite a bit quicker than this as per book figures but it 'feels' quicker or rather easier to get moving quickly in the Octavia.

I own a 2.0 PD140 DSG Octavia, and test drove a 1.9 PD105 DSG Octavia last year.

They both drive the same when doing any kind of normal driving.....practically no difference at all. The difference only comes when you use full throttle, particularly at higher speeds.....the PD140 accelerates well right up to 3 figure speeds whereas the PD105 does not accelerate quite as fast, as you might expect.

If you are the sort of driver who never floors the throttle you'd never know the difference between the two.....at least in DSG guise.
