Haldex

Featured Replies

Changed my Haldex fluid today. The stuff that came out was horrible, and my Yeti has only done 19000miles.

I forgot to mention the total cost for changing the Haldex fluid myself was,

£22 for 1 litre of fluid ( inc VAT )

                                         £1.38 for the syringe.

As long as you can get the vehicle up on ramps etc it is a simple job, took about an hour and a half ( including coffee while letting it drain )

I bought and use a garden pressure spray normally used for spaying fruit trees etc, but without the nozzle.

Thanks for this, am about to buy all the stuff to do my next service and was wondering about doing the Haldex change.

I presume the bottom bolt is the drain.

Which one do you fill through, middle or top ?

EDIT: Just noticed the removed bolt right at the top, presume that's where you filled through ?

Snap - I do mine pretty much every 20k also - many on here say its over the top but when you actually see the difference in what comes out compared to the new stuff... And its a cheap enough job also. Even my local Skoda dealer only charged £50 iirc :)

Yes the one at the top is removed with a 5mm allen key, it's quite small, that is the fill hole. The drain plug needs an 8mm key, if you look just below the first of the three bolt heads in the photo, you will see a bit of a stain, that is where the plug is, it is not hexagonal but round and quite long, as can be seen in the other photo. You won't get the full litre in.

I just enjoy doing things myself, most service items are simple to do if you have the time, a few tools and don't mind getting your hands dirty. Plus I know it has been done.

There is a Skoda part for doing the job, one end screws into the fill hole and the bottle of fluid on the other, but it costs almost as much as the fluid.

Yeah, that would be ok if I was doing it often but for me the garden implement does it well enough.

It's a good idea, anything to make a job easier is welcome, especially now I've turned 68.

Is the Haldex unit & rear diff combined - IE they share the same oil, or is the oil for both kept separate ?

  • Author

They are separate, and you can't mix the fluid.

You could be my younger brother :-))

Does anyone know if the Haldex on the pre-FL Yeti has a replaceable filter ?

It has one, but I doubt it can be replaced without taking the whole Haldex unit off first: http://youtu.be/GfghsP1XHcc?t=8m20s

There is no filter to be changed.

There is no filter to be changed.

Yet to get under the car to check 100%, but I fairly certain there IS a filter - it's just that replacement doesn't feature on the maintenance schedule.

The VWVortex thread I posted shows the Gen 4 Haldex on a Tiguan, and the filter is highlighted.

You can buy Gen 4 filter kits, eg: http://www.awesomegti.com/haldex-gen-4-filter-replacement-kit

Not cheap though.

Am hoping to change the Haldex oil in mine tomorrow; I bought the oil from TPS yesterday, and hopefully a big syringe & some tubing will be arriving in the post tomorrow :)

Changed mine yesterday. Took roughly 600ml, and by using a kitchen jug to convert from the flour/sugar measurements in Anzio's photos to millilitres, that seems about right :)

So you don't fill til it flows out?

I waited until it stopped running back out of the inspection/filling hole. Got a bit more back in than drained out.

Yes you do, I just wanted to double check I was in the right ballpark with quantities :)

Couldn't measure what had come out, but could see from the new bottle I'd used around 600ml. Which is about the same amount as Anzio drained out. So all sounds about right.

How did you get on with the filter?  I can't see anything under mine.
