Coding an Airbag ECU

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Anyone any experience of coding a used airbag ECU to a Fabia (2001 Elegance TDI).

Airbag light was on the dash, error code was unable to communicate with controller.  Bought a used airbag ECU off of eBay, identical part number, and this does communicate via the OBD port.

However, it won't accept any 'new' codes.  As the old airbag ECU was dead, my mechanic who is trying to code it is unable to read the old code, but is trying multiple entries with the replacement airbag ECU.   He says he's had no problems in the past doing it this way with new airbag ECUs, but this one refuses to accept any changes to the coding.

Has anyone any experience of this, and have any ideas what alternate options there may be, aside from buying a new £400 airbag ECU?

Many Thanks

I didn't think there was much coding on them aside from disabling passenger one etc.  Do you know if the Elegance could have been specced with side airbags in the seats?

I don't believe so... Think it's just drivers and passengers front air bags?

The only thing I have seen through forum searches, is that someone had exactly the same problem, bought another used one, plugged it in and it worked first time.  So tempted to buy another used one, identical part number again.  Other than that I'm a bit stumped, and reluctant to go down the new part route for a car worth very little.

Just to update anyone who comes across a similar problem.

After much internet searching, I took a risk on a second Airbag controller, same part number and index number.  This worked immediately, no coding and resolved the Airbag light issue.

I saw one other post recommending this on a VW forum so would definitely say if you buy a used airbag controller and still have issues, try another!
