Superb > Citigo

Featured Replies

After 8 years we have just chopped our 10 year old 2.5 TDi Superb in for a new Citigo Elegance Greentech 75 which we pick up on Tues.

I can't say it's been an easy decision & it's the first time I've ever bought a car using a spreadsheet for justification but the numbers make sense that it's the right time to change.

I do keep looking at the Superb & asking myself am I making the right decision.  I guess it's like a comfy pair of shoes or old jacket that you just know is past it's best but can't bear to part with!

it's been a fantastic car & we have done over 60k in it,  Other than a few minor faults it's been totally reliable & I reckon we must have averaged about 35mpg combined over time of ownership.  Not bad for a big old bus.

The though of 60+mpg & a car that warms up in no time etc is the real appeal of the Citigo, especially as most of our driving is now on the town.  Struggling however to convince the kids who have already decided they hate it.  Can't please everyone I suppose!

Anyone else made the same change??

No regrets??

first thing I thought when I read the topic header lol

Made the change 6 weeks ago, although from 1.9 tdi auto.

Comfy shoes to trainers, light, nippy and blinding round town, which, like you is where most of my driving is now.

You won't regret it,I know I don't.

as to the kids, its easy, treat them like the wife :):bandit:  :bandit:  :bandit:  :bandit:

tell them unless they can pay for it, belt up (both senses of the wording :) )

seriously, though they will learn to love it, being a 4 seater they will not have to share the back as there is not third seatbelt

and ultimately a great car for them to learn to drive in when old enough :)

will go and hide before SWMBO see the comment :(

If most of your driving is in town, I don't think you will get 60+ mpg. Think more in terms of 50+.

tom you realise he has got to go and rework all those spreadsheets now that you have changed the goal posts :)

It's crazy that such a capable car drops to "only" 50+mpg in town...

Did a couple of medium runs (40 miles and 20 miles) a couple of weeks ago and got 62mpg without even trying and ours is an ASG.

I went from a 3.6V6 Superb Elegance to a Citigo 75 Elegance.  Apart from not being able to overtake without six months of prior planning, its been a very easy swap.  Refinement, comfort and economy are all brilliant. The thing the kids will miss is the relative lack of legroom compared to the Superb, but otherwise the Citigo is a pleasure. An with me seeing 70mpg and £0 road tax it makes financial sense too.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine.

I did 130,000 miles in my 1.9 diesel Superb. The dealer that bought her is still running it himself a year later. I miss the power and room of the Superb. However, as a poor pensioner my Citigo makes sense to my finances. I am enjoying driving the car. It suits us and our needs. Does fine on motorways as well as town.

We are not alone

Group hug :D

Still enjoying it 6 months + on. Sure I miss the odd overtake opportunity, but I'm adapting, I use more b roads now :)

Only real annoyance is the parcel shelf and no passenger window switch on drivers door... But that's not bad coming from a Superb.

If town/city driving is your main arena then the Citigo will suit you (others will argue the next bit) but for me that is as far as it goes with some single "A" roads but if you are looking for an all rounder with some get up and go then the Citigo is missing a vital component an "Engine" yeah it will get to the speeds but it takes and age especially if loaded, do not attempt an overtake unless the object is stationary.

I'm fortunate to have the best of both my Vrs everyday and the use of swmbo's Citigo, for pottering around town.

Lifetime mpg on the Citigo is 58mpg over 4.5k miles and my Vrs is around 47mpg for 20k miles. Do not expect 60+ mpg it is unrealistic, IMO.

Enjoy it they are a nice car but they have limitations.

as for what economy you can get with the majority of driving being around town, see below for my fuelly stats.

60-70mpg is very achievable on the motorways etc if you keep below 70mph.

50+ is also achievable around town if you drive very steadily.

Both those estimated figures above are from the PID read out, in the real world I guess less, around 7-10% less than it says.

I've done the brim to brim fill up checks. It is still for me a very economical car to own and I never worry about how I drive it to conserve fuel, my typical mileage from a full tank is around 320 ish, good enough.

18 months ago we opted for a 60PS Elegance, to compliment the Yeti.

Generally there is just the 2 of us in the vehicle and sometimes only one.

For journeys of 100 miles or less we will always opt for the Citigo, its just so much fun to drive.

As for performance you need to give it some beans and I find its more than capable, yes I agree it will not go from 50 - 80 uphill with a headwind that quickly, but coming off a roundabout and into a dual lane carriageway its quite easy to overtake any number of cars that slouch around the corners.

Even the 60 will maintain 80mph quite easily on motorways and dual carriageways, just don't expect to do that with 4 up and/or a boot full of stuff.

All our consumption data and other expenditure is logged on Spritmonitor and the figures on there are somewhat more realistic than what the PID shows.

Spritmonitor also provides a cost analysis including depreciation (I don't tinker with the rates that they use for this but I am sure they are on the high side, whereas residual values for Yeti's in particular are higher than the book would say).

We have owned both vehicles for almost the same length of time and the total miles done by both are similar.

The total costs per mile for the Yeti (inc insurance, fuel, tax, etc - servicing is free for both for now) is 83p/mile

The Citigo is almost half that at 46p/mile

as above^^^^ rev the nuts off it, it goes pleanty fast enough then.... thats how I drive swmbo's citigo when I get in it, (generally between 4-6,000 revs! lol)  and it makes a lovely noise, I still overtake slow cars :P  handles well, and still doesn't drop below 50 mpg :) (we have no town to speak of really)

Its how I tend to drive my eunos too.... I just have to, after suddenly realising there is no supercharger , like in the vRS! lol...
