DPF Filter

Featured Replies

Hi just wanted some advice regarding the dpf filter on my Octavia vrs,is it legal to have it removed?if so would it pass its mot?

Regards

Steve

Legal to remove it....yes.

Pass an mot....technicaly no unless you find a friendly mot tester.

Dpf filters are a joke on pd engined vrs's and should never have been there in the first place. Getting that removed and egr blanked was the best thing i have done to my vrs. Mot september so no mot experience

Thanks for the advice Ryan-re,will try and find a friendly not tester the dpf filter is a joke its just a money making thing when it goes wrong

Opinion on this matter is divided.

My interpretation of the various documents available online is that removing the DPF isn't illegal.

Driving a car with its DPF removed on the road isn't illegal.

However driving a car on the road that does not meet the 'air pollutant emissions standards' is illegal.

It is likely that removing the DPF will prevent the car from meeting those emissions standards, however it may be possible that it might continue to meet the standards. Who knows for sure?

As diesels don't have their emissions tested as part of the MOT it would also be difficult to prove.

Some bed time reading for you here...

After suffering dearly with a failing DPF on my old PD170 vRS I wouldn't hesitate to recommend having it removed.

The value of the car versus the cost of a replacement DPF (£1,200+) will see lots of TDi vRS's written off in a few years time.

To make your car pass mot  all you need to do is remove the insides of the dps filter so the original pipe is still there, thats all what is looked for on dpf's during mot (done the course last week) and obviously emissions arnt through the roof

Like above. If i have any issue on my 1.6tdi that's what will be done. Out the interior and remapped.

Few years back for some reason thw interior of the catalic converter broke in pieces and it rattled on idle, it was taken out and cut 3/4 on top, over the original welding, to remove bits and pieces. Top welded back and from under car cannot see new welding because its facing the cars floor, meanwhile all dust and dirt disfarced the job.

To have it removed, yes, its legal. To use it on the public road afterwards, no. That a person doing an MOT does not spot that it is missing does not change the requirement that it must be present. Diesel emission checks are on the way and you may find you have to put it back in. You also need to consider your insurance. Its an engine modification, one that some say increases performance. However, most insurers will not be happy with a mod that makes a car unfit for use on public roads. Later, when you trade the car in, you may find the dealer will check and refuse to take it, too.

The DPF will also have to be mapped out of the ECU by a remap, you cannot just remove the filter.

To have it removed, yes, its legal. To use it on the public road afterwards, no.

This is the bit that is open to interpretation, to use a car on the road that has had it's DPF removed is illegal?

Not necessarily, the car needs to fail to meet 'air pollutant emissions standards' before it becomes iilegal.

Removing the DPF might mean the car fails to meet those standards but it will be impossible to prove given the current MOT test procedures.

Visual inspections only and a soot, not emissions test mean the MOT tester will struggle to justify a fail.

The insurance concerns are valid and this would be more of a concern to me than the MOT.

Cost me £150 to have the DPF removed and a dummy DPF made up. This has all the sensors as standard but just a box that is straigh through. The MOT tester cannot prove its not a real DPF so as far as he can do is say its there and pass it.

Thats not bad how the vrs goin u lovin the boost lol

Its only 200bhp. Had problems with exhaust gas temps cutting power. Looks like i need a bit more at the bottom where the DPF goes into the flex. Its a sharp bend, probably causing the issue.
