Mixed journeys shouldn't be too bad

Regular short runs like mine (3 miles to work etc) tend not to be

A good indicator might be your annual mileage

Mines 7k ish,so what's yours?

hi dazz600

both cars are insured at 8000 pa and we tend to be below on both, in the overall scheme of things we don't QUALIFY  or meet the milage requirements to justify running diesel cars, but the 07 we've had from new, bought just as skoda were introducing the mk 2 and the other car was bought on favourable terms when we purchased it 2nd hand, however I just prefer driving, albeit 'old school' diesels

Hi david,

I was not suggesting a mk3, just hi-lighting how things change with a two forward and one back sort of thing with engine tech etc

the gap in mpg between petrol and diesel is narrowing, so the mileage to pay for the diesel engine premium price is increasing, I would say instead of 10-12k probably nearer 15-18k

but there are many other reasons some choose a diesel, longer engine life, less flammable in an accident (brake fluid is pretty flammable surprisingly), reliability, the list can go on,

but there is a similar list for choosing a petrol over a diesel, quieter running, quicker to warm up, no dpf etc

depends what you want from the car and its use, engine choice is normally the hardest thing when choosing a new car, spec and extra's are pretty easy compared to engine

I think the rule is "drive it like you would a petrol" - CR engines rely much more on the turbo being on song for efficiency so you need to have more then 1500rpm or so AFTER you've changed gear.  They might seem to be okay at the sort of revs "old school" diesels did, but efficiency suffers, hence mpg.

Estate Man - please correct me if I'm wrong in any of the above..

Phil, you are spot on. It is the efficiency that suffers. I must point out for David White that the efficiency suffers considerably during, and for a few thousand miles after initial running in. The engines are incredibly tight leading to a more disproportionate reduction in fuel economy if the engine is not driven in a more petrol like manor. I don't mean you should rev the what nots off it, but just not slog it around like a PD engine.  But they are a fine engine.
