Rapid 1.2TSI Sport - Why De-Badge?

Featured Replies

I notice on the Rapid Sport Register topic, quite a few owners have de-badged already, or plan to de-badge.   I am curious as to the rationale behind this?

1.    Are you ashamed to own a Skoda?

2.    Do you really wish you had an Octavia but couldn't quite afford it, so you want friends and neighbours to think you could?

3.    Do you honestly think the finish looks smoother without its badges?

As far as I am concerned  (I rather suspect auctioneers and used car dealers would back me up when the car comes in as a second hand proposal) if I see a badgeless car, I assume it is a company car.

You see, in the days when the Ford Cortina was the benchmark, there was a status hierarchy where the 1.6L went to the sales rep., the 2.0GL went to middle managers and the 2.3 Ghia was the accolade of senior managers.   At Director level, a Ford Granada represented the very pinnacle of success!

When firms, and civil service departments started allowing other marques to creep into the fleet, the badge was still perceived as showing status so many Fleet Managers requested manufacturers to offer debadged cars as an option.

I feel that debadging a pretty car like the Rapid Sport is not an altogether wise move financially.

Now open for debate...............

you know the letters (Rapid 1.2 tsi i.e.) can easily be placed again. double side tape is what they come with, so it's quite easy to put them back on.

so.... ???

fuerthermore, you have to accept that every single person has his own personal taste. it does not have to be a kind of inferiority complex...u read too much B class psychology books i think :)

i think i was the First to debadge my Rapid (the letters Rapid 1.2 tsi i.e.) and the reason is (drums) : i like how it  looks. clean and smooth.

i got a 07 Opel GT, also debadged (front grill) - believe me no need to be ashamed of a car like that :)

so pls just accept that some people like some things that others don't. end of story.

(don't mean to offense anyone by this post)

Think you are reading a bit too much into this....

I think it makes the back end look cleaner and I dislike the new lettering Skoda use so I made the decision to debadge it.

Pretty sure nobody is asking you to do the same, nor are they criticising your decision not to, its personal preference.

Also, having owned 2 Octy VRSs, if I wanted an Octavia I would buy one..... Then I would debadge it!

You've defo made a Bealine for a tad of ammo with this topic.(sorry 4 the pun)

In reply to your questions tho :

1) if I was going to feel ashamed about buying a skoda then I wouldn't of bought one. Surely that is common sense and answers itself.
2) if I wanted an octavia I would of bought one.
3) de-badgeing really cleans up and smooths the rear end up and the main skoda badge is still there. So it is a skoda !

Nobody is asking you to de-badge you car as that would be your choice at the end of the day.

hope this clears up why I have de-badged my rapid sport

Yes - I can see a cleaner line - definitely looks good and there are no tell-tale marks to show where the lettering has been.

However, I am going to proudly drive my Skoda Rapid Sport as it is - it was my choice, my cash, my decision to buy and is not a company car!

The double sided tape suggestion is brilliant as that would enable the owner to re-badge the car when getting ready to dispose of it.

"Horses for courses", I guess!

I think de badging gives the car a nice clean smooth finish. As said these new badges are a pain to clean in/around. When I de badged my Citigo Sport I couldn't believe the amount of dirt that had got around and in the lettering. I'm so glad if the smooth tailgate now.

I did the same to my Octavia too for the same reasons. I'm not ashamed of owning a Skoda at all it's my preference :)

You forgot one thing.

Having a badge saying "Rapid" on the back of a 1.2 petrol car that's reasonably large, is a bit odd.

When I had mine I got asked what engine it had, only to be asked why it's called a Rapid with such a small engine.  Because it can't be very Rapid.

If I'd have been keeping it long term I'd have taken it off too.

I quite like the irony of it tbh :)

Does the Sport say 1.2 on the back   at least it does now apparently according to my dealer have rear disc brakes! :sun:

I thought all but the non turbo 1.2's had rear discs.

Debadging a car these days is simples to put back too..AFAIK in the "good" old days the badges/letters were in fact mounted through the body work, in a lot of cases.

I have not debadged mine but understand going for the clean look.

I do not see it as someone trying to make it look something its not or being embarrassed by their choice of car/model.

I like the Sport, I like the Elegance, and I'm somewhere to deciding what model I want.

I'm not bothered much about what the badges on any model really, they will stay.

The only thing that bothers me apart from the 17" alloys (still not sure about them) is the rear spoiler. Ok it goes with the black mirrors, black/white theme but I want silver now that you can spec a colour other than white. I think the spoiler will look odd on a silver car, like unfinished in need of painting body colour.

BTW the car in the pictures above look good, it's just my personal choice of style/colours I like.

Yes they do.. Its just that the Fabai Monte Carlo has drums which I think lets it down! so I'm glad the Rapid has the rear discs, gives it more of a performance look.

Its all personal preference. I'd rather have a harder ride than tiny wheels spoiling the look of the car, for others the ride is more important. As with most things... Personal preference.

If you remove the rear badging then why is the main Skoda badge not also removed? Surely this would make the look even 'cleaner'?

It's been discussed on the Octavia forum those that take it to the next level and remove the rear wiper for an 'even cleaner' look.

Strange though that those that de-badge their vRS Octavia's leave the vRS badge in place :D

The problem with the main badge is that it usually sits in a recess with pins like the Octavia. Not sure if mine or the Rapid has this. Then you have to fill and spray.

  • 1 month later...

I've asked my dealer to debadge mine before I collect it. I think it will look great on a Race Blue Sport :)

We recently bought a used VW minus it's model & engine size badges.

AFAIK, it was either ordered without them, or the supplying dearer didn't fit the badges at the original owner's request.

The VW badge has to stay, it's the boot opener!

The UK is unusual in that the Monte has rear drums, those I've seen while travelling in Europe have discs at the back like the Greenline; obviously a SUK request for whatever reason.

Not driven a Rapid/Spaceback on 15" rims so cannot comment but for me anyway, the 16 and 17" offerings seem fine for ride, particularly on the 1.2TSI.

Mind we do have a Monte :D

I found the ride on 17,s comfy compared to my Octavia on 17,s. That was quite harsh.

I have driven two Rapids on 15" rims, the ride was OK, not much fun to drive especially with the 86ps engine but not unpleasant.

Unless you could buy a Rapid with a lot more grunt, I'd not bother with bigger wheels, there's no point in dressing up a "no go showboat".

Would agree but SUK particularly like big alloys and often give you no choice, again looking at the Monte for example, in Europe 16" rims are the default but in the UK the optional 17" have been made standard by SUK.

Already had one battle with SUK over this issue with a previous Yeti, which Skoda Auto sorted for me but it was hard work.
