2014 Yeti L&K 4x4 170 DSG or 2014 Octavia Scout DSG

Featured Replies

My wife has 2013MY Yeti 2.0 TDI 110 Adventure 2WD. It's so in fact good, I'm thinking of getting one for myself when my car lease ends in December.

However the new Octavia Scout has also got my attention. But leasing costs are largely dependent on depreciation. So a quick question for Skoda experts on here. Which has the better depreciation? Yeti 4x4 or Octavia Scout? I know the normal Octavia's are worse than the Yeti's. But is that the case for the Octavia Scout? Looking at used prices, Octavia Scouts seem to hold their value very well.

IIIRC "which" magazine recently calculated the yeti to be the UKs lowest depreciation car.

Only one stands out from the crowd as not needing approval from others IMO.

If motorway speed economy is not a priority it's Yeti.....I couldn't go back to sitting on the ground again.

most of my driving is motorway miles to be honest. But i'm guessing the Scout will use the same engine and DSG gear box - so economy won't be that much different???

didn't realise Yeti was the so the lowest depreciating car! i knew it was very good though...

It's to do with the relatively poor drag coefficient (CD) of .37 multiplied by area (CDA) which determines total aero drag, which at motorway speeds also determines comparatively higher fuel consumption of the Yeti compared to a newish designed wagon styled body.

Yes same engine & box - but significantly worse aerodynamics - I get about 42MPG on our 170 DSG on the motorway -not sure how that compares with the Octy...

Possibly because the model has stayed largely the same since 2009...there must have been 3 "all-new" Golfs in that time :)

Took out a five year warranty with our Octy III 4x4, as I knew I'd be keeping it quite a while longer to mitigate the noticeable extra depreciation of the Octy over the Yeti.

Both previous Yeti's only lost 1k for every 10,000 miles driven.

Actually I think you'll find that the Octavia mk3 now uses a newer platform than the Yeti and also has a newer engine line up.

While the Yeti gets the "older" 170 CR diesel that was in the Octy mk2, the New Octy mk3 gets a more advanced (and more powerful) 184 CR diesel engine in it's top diesel spec.

That's assuming the Octy Scout will have the option of the VRS diesel as the standard 4x4 Octy can only have the 150 CR engine, itself an improvement over the 140 CR engine available in the mk2 Octy and Yeti.

I am a big Yeti fan, but the Octy is running updated tech and a bigger boot.

So it's not such an easy choice.

Options like Active Cruise Control can't even be added to a Yeti.

Overall I'd expect the Octy Scout to hold it's value better than the hum-drum Octavias, but the Yeti will probably hold it's value better than both.

You will pay a lot more for an Octy Scout with the same spec as a Yeti for one...  But it is a FAR better car with the MQB platform with far better tech as Bossfox pointed out. Difficult choice this but if you want the latest radios, sat nav, active Cruise control etc there is only one way to go and that is Octy Scout.

Or perhaps it's SEAT equivalent, just announced... Will be interesting to see how the prices compare. The SEAT is shorter than the Octavia... http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/seat-reveals-new-leon-st-based-crossover

It looks OK...  but not as good as the Octy Scout in my book.  And trust me inside the Octy walks it by a big margin as well.  The Leon interior LOOKS ok but just does not cut the mustard to my eyes and fingers when I get in it.

T E R R I B L E name too...  X-Perience...  Urgh  What were they thinking?!?!?  It is like the name a teenager will come up with for a nightclub in Benidorm.

One thing the SEAT (might in the UK - PR claims so) offers is 4x4 AND DSG. Also its not trying to be Mondeo sized ;)

Is there any word of the SEAT 4x4 being sold in the UK? There was always a Leon 4 motion in Europe but not in the UK

And the CR170. Which probably won't be available in an Octavia Scout (though I'm prepared to be proven wrong there).

Ah; you're right. I still think of that as being the CR170 for some reason - probably because Skoda are stuck with the CR170 (not that it's not a good engine, it's just that it'd be nice to have the newer one!).

What exactly is the difference other than power, is it just a higher tune?

I believe it is just a higher power output, but I don't know if that's just mapping or if there's a different turbo or owt.

The Seat X Perience will be fully loaded as standard and still cheaper than a base spec Octavia Scout, but smaller.

The Seat Altea Freetrack was dripping with kit, got the MkII Octavia 4x4 underpinnings and the Octavia vRS PD170 engine.

It was a very capable car, just not to everyone's tastes in terms of looks!

Yes please!
