Ah yes, it's something that has always troubled me about vag group engines, you are indeed right the is actually 3 different types of block on an aee engine code, it beggars believf that the could do something like that as well, it's outrageous that the same engine code can have a different physical shape depending on which vehicle it is fitted to, sadly for you it looks like you are going to have to find another engine, preferably one from a felicia or the type from a 6n polo, tis a shame they didn't re-classify the ones with a different gearbox bell house bolt pattern to a different engine code because it leads to massive confusion.

the other 3rd type I mention are by rare and were only fitted to polos prior to 1995 and they have a chain driven oil pump instead and the sump has a different bolt pattern too, but other than that it will interchange as a bolt on fit..

the rule of thumb to go on is if it has a steel sump it will fit your fun bus.

update on engine

brought a 6n polo  70000 ish on the clock  no knocks or rattles for £250   towed it 70 mile from luton  on an "A" frame

took out engine and gearbox

gearbox /clutch and flywheel are no use   so had to use mine  off the fun

engine mount had to be changed to the fun type  so changed the  cambelt and pully

the cambelt cover is slightly different so a little tweaking there but every thing else fits

big thanks for your help :)

Ah excellent yes, make sure you use loctite on the bolts that hold the gearbox adaptor plate to the engine block otherwise they sometimes work loose over time.
