reversing lights

Featured Replies

morning, im looking to upgrade my facelift 09 superb reversing lights, ive disabled the bulb out warning light, any suggestions

thanks

If it's a 2009 it won't be a facelift. The facelift was only introduced last year.

I'm guessing you have a MkII.

Is it an estate or Twindoor?

How have you disabled the blown buld warning, this is usually overcome by fitting LED's with inbuilt resistors.

Are you looking for more light output?

The lens on the reverse lights is quite small so you will struggle to make much of an improvement by upgrading to LED's.

Could be a MK1  facelift

yes sorry it is a 09 MK11  and yes I think the reversing lights are very poor

Could be a MK1  facelift.

I assumed that as the post was in the MkII section that it was a MkII :sun:

The reverse light bulb is a W16W on the hatch / Twindoor.

You say you have already disabled the blown-bulb warning system? I'm not sure how you've done this but it will mean that you won't need to limit your search for LED replacement bulbs to CANBUS ones.

If however you do still need to prevent the blown-bulb warning you'll need CANBUS bulbs. Here is an eBay search with loads of results.

The CREE ones are often regarded to be the best.

thanks for that

anything will be better than the original bulbs

I think these days reverse lights are more designed to be seen rather than to see.

Any chance of a how-to guide if you swap to LED reversing lights?

Thanks silver. Has got me thinking, off-topic of course: I wonder if it's possible to replace all of the incandescent bulbs in the rear cluster with canbus LEDs...?

I would have said the exact same until I experienced the LED reverse lights on the FL model.  I think they are great and a huge improvement over the old ones and they do actually help you see behind the car.

The issue with LED over incandescent is that LED's are very directional.

The non-LED rear light clusters on the MkII Superb are designed for normal incandescent bulbs which means that they rely on the reflective background to transfer as much light output from the bulbs out through the red lens. This makes them quite bright.

LED's are usually brighter but you lose some of the benefit of the rear reflector (all of it if the LED bulbs don't have LED's down the sides too) so you lose the 'light bleed' between bulbs.

This is quite important on the Superb to maintain the unique 'C' shape of the night/tail lights, with LED's you'll just get 4x bright red spots instead...
