False Insurance Claim - weird

Featured Replies

SWMBO got an interesting phone call on Monday. Her insurance company ringing about an incident she was involved in 18 months ago in Leitrim, seemingly there was an accident and the persons insurance company are trying to claim of SWMBO.

The funny thing is SWMBO has NEVER driven her car outside the greater Dublin area. The other interesting thing is that they person claiming has BOTH her policy number & license plate number. To me it sounds like a scam.

Anyway her insurance company are looking into it, the guy seems to be fairly interested in seeing the matter sorted. The details are a little sketchy at present but word has it that the person claiming is with a UK insurance company so they reakon its a Northern car.

So I decided to phone a Garda friend to see if he could check if there was any reports on their database about the car being involved in an accident. Nothing showed up in Leitrim. My mate reakons he's heard about the Provo's being involved in a couple of insurance scams and to be careful what details the insurance company give out.

It really looks like someone just made note of the reg & policy number while the car was parked up.

Do cars in NI have their insurance policy numbers displayed then?

Dont think they have to in NI, but its certainly the case in Eire that the insurance cert is displayed in the windscreen next to the tax disc.

What a pain in the a*se :(

Hope it doesn't go any further and the matter is dropped.

Sounds all most suspicious ... especially the 18 month delay. I can't see any reason why that would happen if they had got the vehicle details at the time, after a genuine accident, so at least her insurers should also be suspicious of this incident.

As it's so long ago, I presume you don't have any evidence of being elsewhere? Like credit card transactions which would have gone through at the exact time of the claimed incident, nowhere near the scene? Hopefully you won't need to go that far and it will all blow over.
