Damaged caused by driving without the oil cap

Featured Replies

Sorry but you can not assume.

Best Ask.  Was it on the VAS Diagnostic.

is there a Skoda Software Update or any Enhancements for my Vehicle.

First item on the Service Schedule should be VAS Diagnostic.

& should have a Tick now on the List.

The next 'Skoda Maintenance list' item is 'Reset Service Indicator'.

Some 1.4TSI DQ200 are requiring action on the DSG, but not all.

Maybe best, Call Skoda UK Customer Services and check if your car requires it as part of the 'Service Campaign'.

OK, thanks George. Assume is maybe not the right word. As in, I did not know to ask. But thanks for the insight. Always keen to learn. :)

I totally agree that this could have been much worse had I not checked under the bonnet when I did. I know many people who would not even open their bonnet between services!

I have been known in the past to use nail varnish to mark filters and plugs etc to ensure they were changed, and have had to insist on bits being changed when I showed the service guy that bits had I had been charged for had not been changed (at a ford garages many years ago)

depends how much you trust the garage

Trust a garage, maybe, if i know them.

Trust a main dealers? No chance.

Dr3w_vrs sorry to hear of your experience. I had an indentured apprenticeship in the '60s and I've made a few mistakes even though fully qualified! One thing I remember was being told to finish one section of the job before taking any sort of break to avoid forgetting items - like the oil cap.

I do remember hearing the trickle of new oil going straight through as I'd forgotten to put the sump plug back in before refilling with oil.

Whilst I agree with your annoyance and that of the other posters, not ALL dealers are rubbish. It depends on the attitude and enthusiasm of the supervisory team in the workshop. One major problem has been the perception that all mechanics are low grade/skilled employees so youngsters who are good mechanics look for a way up the employment ladder rather than make a career on the shop floor.

In my case I was offered promotion and took it for some of the above reasons.

Someone once said ' anyone who never makes a mistake never made anything ' !

Bet you (and the annoyed posters above) have made mistakes/omissions/errors at work, your oil cap was a serious mistake and the dealer is trying to make amends. If this was an isolated mistake on the mechanic's and dealer's behalf then give them the benefit of the doubt.

C'mon BRISKODANS give dealers a break - they're not all crooks!

Of course they are not all useless.

Progress Skoda Letchworth are excellent - no irony here, they really had been flawless so far!

Thing is, you need QA procedures to avoid stupid mistakes like that. Simple workflow charts with tick boxes might help :). Yes, with OP's case the dealer recognized shortcomings and wanted to make amends so all good.

Its true. Everybody makes mistakes. Its inevitable.

Im a plumber. Iv made a few, just like every other tradesmen. You live and learn, and even then you make silly ones occasionally.

Id still be pee'd off if it happened to my car though.

Just be thankful you discovered it so soon. Youve defo urged me to have a check after a service.

I once did this with an Astra I once owned. Got about 3 mile down the road to a set of traffic lights and noticed blue smoke coming out of the engine bay + an horrible smell. Knew straight away what I forgot to do!  :peek:

I had this happen with a hire car. It was only driven about 2 miles from the depot to my office and the engine bay looked a right state, but very little oil had actually been lost.

Obviously I only drove the car for a few days but I didn't have any issue.

Don't want to take this OT but Workflow charts with tickboxes?  No use whatsoever.

I've been a Quality Manager in manufacturing for 30+yrs.  ISO9001 is imprinted in my DNA.  I can tell you that workflow charts with tickboxes, signatures, date and time, etc etc NEVER work.

It goes like this:  start the job, do the job, finish the job, pick up checksheet, Time started.   ooh about an hour ago so half eleven, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick..... time finished ermm! better say 1 o'clock.

Reality bites I guess :). So what would work then? I use a system when senior member of the team has to check and sign before work is released-another set of fresh eyes looking at the job. Minimises the number of mistakes but it is not perfect either. ..

Workflow /procedure charts ae another tool and ascany would only work if there is a will and time factored in to use it. If a mechanic is running out of time and rushes the job no amount of QA will help...

You're absolutely right that we all make mistakes and I'm willing to write this off as such. It is how often mistakes happen and how they are subsequently dealt with that makes the difference.

Dr3w, don't worry, this won't have harmed the engine in any way under your circumstances.  Just a lot of mess. Glad you got some recompense. Shouldn't have happened of course, but sadly everyone is human. Actually, I'm not sad that everyone is human, I mean...we all make mistakes!

If you thrash a car and the oil cap is not on right. Luckily you get or you hope you get a 'low oil pressure light's or as I just got. Not on a skoda 'm oil pressure. Stop sagely' the cap went on only one way. And it was on the wrong way.

'stop safely' sorry on phone.
