2nd Gear Crunching 2007 1.9PD

Featured Replies

Hi All,

2007 Octavia 19.PD with 90k miles.  First to Second gear changes becoming increasingly grinding / crunching, especially when moving away briskly.  OK from Third to Second.  No clutch slippage at any revs.  Gearbox or clutch?

This is a pretty common issue on VAG gearboxes.

Often cured with a gear oil change.

So that's your first port of call... it's the cheapest/simplest thing to try first.

VAG say it's filled for life but just wait till you see the colour of the oil!

I changed the gearbox oil on my 2008 octavia thats covered 54,000 miles & this was the colour of the oil that came out (the tub on the right),it improved my 1st to 2nd gear change alot & made the gear changes much smoother, mine is the 6 speed box.

Change oil , if still there adjust cables

If my seat is adjusted to be comfortable for everything else, I have to stretch to depress the clutch pedal fully. If not fully depressed, I get the occasional graunch.

I'm not very tempted to do anything about this.

+several on changing the gearbox oil. As said, much improved gear change and presumably gearbox life.

My mk1 got a bit chunchy at about 60,000 miles. An oil change sorted that, and I have changed the oil at roughly the same intervals since. The mk1 went on to well over 230,000 miles.

I used genuine VAG oil.

Finally got round to changing the oil last month.  1,500 miles since then and really smooth gear changes have returned - changing the oil worked!

Thanks

Bill
