Claying lubricant

Featured Replies

Hi I'm currently using a spray detailer for claying my car but seems a little wasteful.

Any suggestions for an alternative?

Sent using my right thumb

Yeah, Water.    I clayed a whole audi A6 estate last night using just water.

Water..Yes...but use a waxless car shampoo as well

Just to confirm guys - by just "water"..... are you using distilled/filtered water?

Or is the advice that you are happy to use water in any region.... especially "hard" water areas?

Just thinking of high content of minerals in hard water etc. Sanity checking here for others - as it doesnt affect me.

The water in my area is fine and i always use a diluted Meg's Last Touch solution with the clay bar;

but lately using the clay mitt, i have switched to shampoo (waxless) and find this an absolute breeze!

Personally, although Ive not got this issue, I have never heard of claying with distilled water

What purpose would it achieve?

Youre always going to rinse the car afterwards anyway and likely as not, polish the car too

Completely agree on the follow-up actions, rinse, then most likely polish and correction will be applied.

Simply asking the question of the "just water" as a lube....; especially for people in hard water regions.

Personally - i find a slight lubricant assist is preferred. I do this for claying and towel drying stages.

But as always - each to their own.

Last night, water was working great but a little fabric conditioner helps if it's grabbing a bit. I'd already tardis and iron out'd the paint so wasn't much left to clay

Ok cool - i'll bare that in mind.... and test it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

May seem like a daft question (but I am good at them!) but how do you find a `waxless` shampoo? Not all shampoos indicate.

I use a Megs Gold Class and water.

Of my current shampoos... i would use Meg's Gold Class, maybe Meg's Hyperwash for example,

but for a pure shampoo i always use Gtechniq Gwash.

Oh yes - i agree with that 100% Sir!!!

Well...still confused.

I've just read the spec on those 3 and...

a) Megs Gold Class...says it has `conditioner`, dont know if that means `wax free`.

B) Megs Hyperwash...no mention of contents.

c) Gtechniq Gwash...no mention of contents.

So, I'm afraid, the question still remains..."how do I know"?

I currently have 5 ltrs of AF Lather shampoo...would you know whether or not that is `wax free`?

Product
Lather PH Neutral Car Shampoo

Price and Availability
£11.95 for 500ml from Auto Finesse and all AF resellers

Manufacturers Product Information
Lather car shampoo is a highly concentrated formula designed to be tough on dirt and road grime, whilst gentle on wax, paint sealant layers and other car care products, the ultra lubricated high foaming action minimises the risk of inflicting fine scratches during the wash stage, where the majority of swirl marks are inflicted. This powerful car shampoo concentrate Dilutes up to 2000:1 water – solution, and contains no gloss enhancers or wax to leave you a pure finish and not disrupt or interfere with car wax or sealant layers you may have on your paintwork.

Also...Worth mentioning........I some times use some Fairy liquid as a lube..

Whilst its not everyones choice, it does work (Very slippy) and I have seen any problems whatsoever....providing its just an annual claying and not a regular regime

and it costs nothing!!

Worth considering a dilutable QD like Citrus Bling.

You know what you are getting and once diluted it goes miles.

Plus it is Multi use

Thanks very much for this, Chris.

I did try to register with DW last week but for some reason it didn't work.

Never mind, as long as I've got this part of the Skoda forum I'm well taken care of.

Best Regards

Mike.

I did mention this option in Post #4; using Meg's Last Touch has been my preference for many years with claying.

Always happy to options and again as above, shampoo with the clay mitt works very well.

It's also a great drying aid when diluted further, before the towel drying stage.

Some research and questions on Detailing World should get the answer on any shampoo you have.

Most of the main vendors are available to answer any queries... Gtechniq Gwash confirmed ok.
