Easy

1- Isnt the Golf more expensive?

2- The Golf looks like a chavs car. The Octy doesnt

3- The Octy looks 10x better

4- You have acres more space in the Octy

Youve got to really really need the supposed slightly better handling to go for the Golf. But if your so keen on the handling side of things, there are surely much better options than the Golf. Options which really do make a difference over the Octy.

Nah, Octy, or go for something better than the Golf.

Aren't you going to lose a lot of money in depreciation selling that vRS so soon?

Golf is 300bhp and you can get one on PCP for £240pcm over 2 years at the mo!! They are doing INSANE deals on the Golf R at the mo for some reason.

This says do it to me!

golf yes please

Why do you suddenly want to change cars?

What's the deposit/initial payment they want on that?

The Golf is a no brainer unless you need the space of the Octy. I'd have gone for a Golf had I not needed the large boot for my young family.

Agree - its a far nicer car all round bar the outright space but its hardly cramped. R any day over the vRS for me. :)

Golf R > Octy vRS. 300 BHP and 4WD would be magic.

I need the boot space, so Octavia Estate for me. I did hear rumours of a R wagon though, that would be interesting...

30k would get you some serious machinery

Do you not consider the 300ps awd R (that can do 0-60 in 4.9 seconds) as a piece of 'serious machinery' then? What other brand new, factory standard, fully warranted, family hatch options are more 'serious' for less cash? :)

I wasnt meaning new

1. Of course, it's a better car.

2. Chav's car?  rose tinted specs I believe.

3. Wrong, the Golf looks better.  See coment 2 above.

4. True.  If you need a large family car the Ocativa is better than a Golf Hatchback.

"supposedly slightly better handling" ?

The Golf has been rated by EVO mag as it's best Hot Hatch currently on sale.

The Octavia is a nice car, but it's a quick family car.

300bhp(ish) and four wheel drive makes the Golf R a cracking car.

I'd have one in a heatbeat over an Octy VRS, even if it is a bit more expensive.

Unless I needed the larger Octy boot.

OP, do it.  Find out what traction is from low speed.

Personally I would'nt change a car for at least 2 years, but if you have the money and you want it and there is no practical reason not to then go for it.

EACH TO THEIR OWN!!

Errrr both. It's only 240 a month right.

If I didn't have a dog or need another petrol car I'd be all over that. Stonking deals on those R at moment

Dont do it!!! buy a Dacia Duster instead! :D There you go I have done the friendly thing and tried to talk you out of it!

The VW is a great car, as a former R32 owner I can understand the dilemma. I am a hatchback man at heart but family growth and kids hobbies forced a car with space, currently a touran (yawn  ), my compromise was the vRS Estate which is due any day! A Quick Family Car! If I was not encumbered by the need for space I would probably go for the Golf R or the latest botox laden Focus RS. Although both golf and focus look crap in an estate!

I know its personal taste but I think that the Golf is starting to look a little old. The millionth face lift isn't an improvement. VW are scared of frightening off the Golf Fanboys to make the necessary radical changes to the looks.

Suppose it depends how the Octavia is financed and what kind of part ex deal you'll get.

Worth noting the exceptional deals on the R are personal lease and not PCP, given the cost of the R and the relatively ****y loan rates by comparison there is no way you'll get an R for low 200's per month unless you stick alot of money in at the front end.

The lease deals are good but you'll have to stick in a sizable deposit in, also lease deals by their very nature (more geared up for business than personal funding) are stricter (vehicle condition at end of lease, early termination, mileage excesses...after all the deal cannot be VT'd or the car part ex'd) so you need to know the black and white before signing the dotted line.

If I were in the market right now for a v fast hatch and it was not going to get hammered with mileage and the toils of family life Id consider a 2/3 year lease on an R but as a PCP I cant see it being anywhere near as affordable as an Octavia with the 0% APR or low rate finance; also nothing like as useful as a family holdall.
