Difference is ones a Mans car and the other is a boys car. Let you decide which is which.

One is a practical Family(persons) car, the other is a poser, that says look at my ..........

depend what u want to do with the car ... me I wanted a general runabout that had a bit of umph so the VRS TDi suited me as an everyday car as its reasonably quick, spacious, frugal and comfortable.

I have a Mk 1 Focus RS tricked to 335 ponies and a Sapph Cossie so the Octy takes care of everyday duties whilst the RS's keep me entertained at the weekend

I f i was to just get an everyday car for 100% use maybe the Golf R would fit the bill ?

do it! bacardi and coke, do it!

If it's under £250 a month as someone stated above then it's less than a vRS (depending on the amount put down)......no brainer.

Yeah. Go for it. Life is too short.

To me the Golf looks like it's had after market add on's fitted, like a boy racer would do. Golfs are everywhere. Octavia's arn't ( yet). Mine is a green Vrs estate tsi, subtle in styling, stands out in a carpark at a distance (haven't lost it yet). More than enough power for UK roads and doesn't attract the, do you want a race brigade. Just the police...

If I didn't have kids and didn't need so much space I would have gone for the Golf. The plain GTI has superior build, handles slightly better, and has the stronger image and residuals. The GTI PP improves handling and performance and little further, and the R offers proper sports car performance.

The M135i is a better "sports car" than the Golf R and is available for similar costs, but it has even less space. I couldn't live with the space available  within my 3-Series, so Golf and M135i were dismissed. A C63 Estate would have been ideal for me if it wasn't for the price. In the end the VRS TSI Estate was the best compromise because I need the space and practicality more often than I need more bhp.

1. Of course, it's a better car.

2. Chav's car?  rose tinted specs I believe.

3. Wrong, the Golf looks better.  See coment 2 above.

4. True.  If you need a large family car the Ocativa is better than a Golf Hatchback.

"supposedly slightly better handling" ?

The Golf has been rated by EVO mag as it's best Hot Hatch currently on sale.

The Octavia is a nice car, but it's a quick family car.

300bhp(ish) and four wheel drive makes the Golf R a cracking car.

I'd have one in a heatbeat over an Octy VRS, even if it is a bit more expensive.

Unless I needed the larger Octy boot.

OP, do it.  Find out what traction is from low speed.

1- Its a better car in some respects, but not in others.

2- Rose tinted specs are when you remember something as being better than it really was. No chance of that. The Skoda's used to be ****e! Still, unsure how that corresponds with a chavs car. As for whether it is a chavs car. Well, obviously my comments are my opinion, and my opinion firmly stands. You wouldnt want me to change it just because of your say so would you?

3- Again, should I be changing my opinion? Nah, I dont think so.

4- Well we agree on that one.

As for your comment "The Octavia is a nice car, but its a quick family car"

Congrats. You are spot on. It is a quick family car. Thats the Skoda Octavia to a 'T'. Something this Golf most certainly isnt. So assuming you all love the Octy for what it is, the Golf must be worse?

You also have the Golf off to a 'T'- A hot hatch. Thats all it is. A hot hatch.

Someone mentioned 30k. For that price I can get an XF. A proper sports saloon. Not just a hot hatch

As a drivers car there is only 1 choice, it's not the Octy. Sorry.....

They are both blue, but that's probably all they have in common apart from the same platform?

From a practical and VFM point of view the Octy would win, certainly for me anyway.. but for everything else it's the golf.

Sorry but it's similar to another thread on the forum comparing the vRS to a M4. WTF. Good as the vRS is these cars are in a different league....IMO of course.

I'm gobsmacked with some of the views on this thread. Fair enough, its a forum and the right place to view opinions but I do wonder how many contributors have actually driven these two cars? I drove them back to back with a new Leon FR and there is no doubt in my mind the 'R' is superior compared to the Octavia vRS in almost every way. Having said that though, id expect it be better. VW's flagship performance Golf with 300ps and awd v's a fwd family car that's just watered down enough to keep the customers separated from the marques more accomplished offerings... The Golf has the better drivetrain, fantastic traction, is better equipment as standard, has nicer options that aren't available on the vRS, holds its value better and isn't too much more expensive to run. It does however cost a little more to buy and doesn't offer the space that the vRS does in the boot and rear passenger compartment. The Golf R is in an entirely different class so the comparison is probably a little wasted anyway...  but in terms of what the OP is asking; whats the better car? Id have to say the 'R' all day long. :)

I need someone to make me come back to reality.

I'm thinking of changing this...

What is your own list of for and against for your needs then?

I was thinking of changing my GTi for an R but after reading up on the differences decided it was not for me - too old probably.

What is your own list of for and against for your needs then?

To be honest. My requirements are minimal. I didn't buy the octavia as a family car, because I don't have a family.

I got it because I liked the look, the performance and equipment and most of all the price. 0% meant that it was a good deal. That and that my BMW 330CI was starting to cost me and not only on fuel.

I still love the octavia. I can tell I still do because I still clean it anally every few days and worry where I park it.

But for some reason I've got a little bored of it. And I have no idea why.

I just fancied a change and the Golf R is a lovely beast. That's if you don't mind the 4 oval exhausts which appears to annoy a lot of people for some reason. For me it doesn't look like its ram raided a ripspeed catalogue at all.

So boot spaces isn't too much of a problem at the moment. Kids,.......what kids.....The Mrs is who I need to convince. That and secure a good deal. Currently £280 a month on the octavia. So I need to achieve somewhere up to £380 on the Golf. And actually get enough for the Octavia to clear the remainder of the finance.

Sensible approach. Keep what is an awesome car that was described by the dealer as in better condition that when he saw it leave on pick up.

Stupid approach. Take a hit and go for the golf.

Even less sensible. Few year old M3 or C63 AMG......while I still can have a silly car I'm starting to think ..why not

5K per year!! Much use as a chocolate teapot then. Who does 5K per year nowadays??

Sounds to me like you are trying to justify buying the car, I know that feeling!

If the money isn't the issue then there must be something else stopping you, otherwise you would of made the decision yourself.

The questions I would ask myself, "Am I to old for this car" and "Will i look like a tit in it" and "will they let me back on the Briskoda forum"

If you are happy with the answers the the first 2 questions then I wouldn't worry so much about the last one (the answer is no get out and never darken our door again)  :p  and go for it!

Depends how many cars you have ;)

I'm gobsmacked with some of the views on this thread. Fair enough, its a forum and the right place to view opinions but I do wonder how many contributors have actually driven these two cars? I dont think there is anything wrong with any views. Its how individuals are looking at it. I dont want a sporty car. Crikey, the Octy is harsh enough as it is, and I dont need to reach 70 a couple of seconds quicker. The Octy makes short work of all slip roads, so that is just the ticket. I also dont require to beat Damon Hill round Silverstone, although i can pretty much guarentee beating Schumacher right now, so thats quick enough for me

The only thing that be of benefit to me with the Golf, is if it was quiter and smoother on long journeys. It quite possibly is, but at major cost elesewhere. I have a lot less space for any passengers i may carry in the back, or any little kids i may want to hide in the boot :D  Not sure any parents would let me hide their kids in a boot though, so lets keep it to luggage :p

I also prefer the interior on the Octy as well. Oh, not forgetting the exterior looks.

The OP asked us to help stop him forking out for a Golf. So I did, but I can only do that from my point of view, as I dont know anybody elses viewpoint.

Boycie...so you've had lots of responses with pros and cons, so what's your final decision regarding your quandary? Please do let us all know.

I still can't decide. The Mrs thinks I'm nuts changing car however the golf is lovely.

I've just got a few quotes back on carwow for the golf and awaiting a call.

I suppose it depends what my Octavia is worth and if I can cover the outstanding balance

About £16000 if you are lucky, you won't believe how low, even with long delivery times on vRS's

Take a deep breath over the next couple of weeks then revisit - well done Mrs B !!

Best of luck whatever you two decide.

Yeah you'll probably do your nuts on the Octavia particularly if you havent had it v long.

My 23k Elegance (though bound to depeciate hard initially and probably slightly more so than a vRS) was worth 17k trade at 4 months old/5k miles and that was the dealer being 1k generous for being a repeat customer. If you put in a good deposit you'll likely be burning it, if not you'll be in neg equity probably if you've bought on PCP and not had the car long (less than 9 months/1 year).

The Golf is lovely....in hindsight I would probably rather have an M135i with its frankly astonishingly good turbo 6 and RWD layout (despite its marmite looks) but i'd only go for the R if I could get out of the Octavia without a tragic financial bailout.
