What did you do to it?

What did you do to it?

Had a deer related incident...

Missed the deer, but mounted a verge doing so, spun it 900 degrees on/off the verge/asphalt, hence the wheels hanging off from the lateral forces. No airbags/injuries but not a nice experience! Had the roof down so glad I swerved as deer on lap would likely have ended up worse.

But the deer was ok though?  :p

I wrote of a band new cooper S (month old), hit a patch of diesel when and it had been lightly raining, caught the back end but it hit a curb and rolled 2 and half times and went round 180 degrees, I was fine, none of the million airbags went off and I climbed out the sun roof!

Now you know why they are called dear, if you just dinged an alloy they'd be called cheap or resonable.

If you were fine there was no reason for the airbags to go off, they'd have just make it more difficult to get out afterwards.

Come on guys lets give the car designers a break here, we walk away from crashes that our parents would have spent months in hospital from and what do we do ? criticise wildlife and airbag sensors.

When I back into something at an outrageous speed I'm just glad I went in backwards and not questioning why the airbag didn't try to break my wrists on the windscreen.

Sorry wasn't a criticism, the air bags don't go off under 35 miles an hour usually, the point I was trying to make (very badly) was I wasn't driving fast when it happened!

Also was not making a criticism, more making the point their was no major impact as i just spun to a halt rather than hitting something. I was trying to give a measure of the experience on the basis that most people know you really have to hit something hard to have the airbags deploy. I missed a telegraph pole by about 6 inches, had I hit it I'm pretty sure it would have been an airbag moment - I was doing 60 at the time.

I was however criticising the deer - standing in the middle of a country lane as I round a bend is just plain rude! ;)

As you say, car designs are pretty amazing this days, as I walked away having physically patted myself down to make sure I was still in one piece I did comment to my passenger "I'm glad I don't drive a Ka or similar!".

Surprised with the Mini rolling the side curtain bags didn't fire - normally they do to protect you as the side of the car is the weakest point. As my 135i was a vert it had the pop up roll bars behind the rear seats which would have been interesting to see fire - though VERY glad they were not needed in my case!

The airbag electronics unit works on G force, speed of impact is largely irrelevant (you can create more G from an abrupt stop at slow speeds compared to a more gradual one from high speeds).

The direction of impact is also vital, anything but a central impact will reduce the force seen by the accelerometer inside.

Side sensors work in the same way, get hit in the side they go off, roll it and it's not a direct impact.

There are times when cars have hit the back of lorries and the rear protection bar of the lorry has pushed the bonnet of the car down deflecting the force of impact and not set off the airbag.

That's why they are suplemntal safety systems - your primary safety system is your seatbelt.

I still can't decide. The Mrs thinks I'm nuts changing car however the golf is lovely.

I've just got a few quotes back on carwow for the golf and awaiting a call.

I suppose it depends what my Octavia is worth and if I can cover the outstanding balance

If you like the VRS so much then live with it and get a ZZR1400 or Hayabusa to give you the adrenaline injection you need every now and then.

If it has to have 4 wheels then a slightly used M3, AMG or RS4 or RS6 with a comprehensive warranty would be my choice

Thinking of moving to Germany? Go for it

Staying in England? How often could you make full use of the difference in performance?

Provided you have a kind bank manager and or a bottomless pit.

I'm not sure what owner's financial position has to do with the benefits of four wheel drive traction. :)

But the UK is known to be perfectly dry all year round so i'm not convinced either! ;)
