My car has a cracked front number plate carrier. It's the black plastic bit that the number plate attaches to. Does anyone know how easy it is to replace this part? Do I have to take the bumper off? I've looked at the workshop manuals but they don't show how the carrier attaches to the bumper. I'm not keen on taking the whole bumper off as the workshop manual shows "body mounted rivets" which sounds bad.

 

 

It just clips on,if your plates screwed on remove that first as the screws could reach the bumper, then use something flat (I used a really thin knife) on the bottom section(the lip on the bottom of it is smaller than the top). . Start in the middle and work to the sides,pulling the clipped parts back,by this time you should be able to get your fingers behind it and give it a firm yank streight towards you.

Cheers. I've had a better look now and now that you have told me it is clipped on I think I can feel the clips by getting my hand behind the bumper with the bonnet open. It's a bit too dark now but I'll get the part off later this week. 

If u need a new one its called the "numberplate Plithe" for when you come to order it ;)

I paid £10 from Skoda ;).. might be a bit dearer now without trade discount.. but im 100% sure it will be less than that!

Thanks for your help. Got the part from Skoda, switched it over, new number plate (and new reg with my initials). Took longer to get the reg switched with my insurance company, phone the council parking permit people etc than to do the job on the car.

 

However, the back plate was an absolute pain beyond measure!

 

Nearly went mad. Self tapping screws had been used and they were utterly corroded into the captive nuts in the boot lid. Despite loads of WD40 and patience I snapped both screws off. Tried a screw extractor, no chance. Took the boot lid trim off to see behind. Didn't help. In the end I filed the broken screws flat with a tiny diamond file, touched up the captive nut with zinc primer and stuck the new plate on with adhesive pads. The dealer that sold me the car new put those plates on. If that dealer hadn't gone bust years ago I'd have gone round and "explained" to him the difference between a machine screw (no taper) and a self tapping wood screw (not even a galvanised one). Idiot. That same dealer had perhaps the worst standards I've ever encountered. I recently discovered when I re-did the door seals that he had broken numerous trim parts and cracked a door card when he did the door seal fix. Some of the trim parts were held in with black sticky mastic! No wonder that Skoda dealer went to the wall. Bloody deserved it.
