Which VCDS

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'll pick up a new VRS during September and looking at adaptations and tweaks etc. Was thinking of getting myself a copy of VCDS and cable but slighty confused which one is required. Looking at Gendan website, there are 2 options

Micro-can USB for about £210

Hex-USB+CAN for about £265

As i will only be using it on my car, will the cheaper option be ok for me ?

Have I missed something obvious here ?

Thanks for any help/advise.

Steve

Just got a ross tech micro can from the maker in The US for £185, it's fine for all the minor adjustment you need to do

Either will work fine with your car bit the more expensive option will work with any VAG car including older non CAN cars.

If you buy direct from the US customs will probably slap vat on it when it arrives in the country which will make it no cheaper than Gendan and probably slower to get it.

Good Day All

I know this may sound a silly question, where do you plug in the VCDS lead? I had assumed that it would be where the fuses are - behind the glove box, but after taking the glove box out to fit wire in my dashcam, I can't see any socket when you plug the lead in!

Many thanks

Steve

It's just under the storage caddy on the drive side

I think by some silly EU these sockets have to be within reach of the driver?

But yes its the purple/pink socket under the RH side of the dash.

Thanks guys

Found it!! I must admit I am pleased its not in same place as where the fuses are!! As I plan to make some changes, I was not looking forward to having to remove the glove box each time!!

All I need now is some one to get started on how to use VCDS! any out there near Cambridge willing to help???

Many thanks any way.

Steve

As yours is a Mk3 Octavia you'll probably need the latest beta software version from Ross Tech as, I believe, the newest full release does not include all features available on this platform.

Many thanks for the info, I have saved it for some LIGHT bedtime reading at a later date!! Once I get VCDS. If I have any problems I am sure their will be someone out there to put me on the right track.

Again many thanks

Steve

Do an autoscan first and save the results before you start fiddling with anything.

Too right - on the MQB platform I would only use the latest beta, currently 14.6.1 EDIT: and a day later 14.7.0

As a hint to all VCDS users, there is a folder called 'Debug' created in your VCDS install folder. In there is a log file that documents every change you make, so you can always look at that to reverse any changes made in error.

Essential to do an Autoscan and save it befor eyou change anything. If you leave the Autoscan log file open it will also keep a track of every change :)

Many many thanks for your advice again!!
