Ford launch a hot diesel hatchback ...

Featured Replies

Sorry but missing your point there, did someone suggest Dirty Diesels are thought of as being low in BHP ?

Its been rather a long time now that heavy oil burning motorway barges have had plenty or power, and also the many smaller sporty eco cars,

Especially the Rep Specials..

I have yet to see one!   Until I got hold of my Rapid, my 85bhp Polo could see off any diesel with a clean pair of heels - unlike those dirty diesel repmobiles!

Diesel is the dirtiest fuel imaginable and should be taxed out of existence.   Not only is it full of carcinogens, but with the new filters that render the particles smaller and smaller, the soot is driven deeper into peoples' lungs and asthsma, bronchitis and other respiratory ailments are on the increase (despite smoking becoming ever less popular) thanks to the corporates' obsession with saving a pound or two.

Really? Ford dropped a 155bhp diesel into the Mk 2 Mondeo ST TDCI and it sold very well.

Personally I think it's brilliant and as a Ford it will ride and handle with the best of them and running costs will be extremely sensible. I will certainly look at the sums when prices are announced and consider part ex-ing the Mondeo for a diesel ST Estate (is that even worse?).

Once remapped it'll make for a very fun car indeed. Remember, the mk1 vrs only had 130bhp and lots of people enjoyed that very much

 BMW 2.0/3.0d/ 5.0d? VAG 2.0/3.0/V8/V10/V12 tdi?  Ford TDCI 130/155/185? Vauxhal CDTI 165?

I'd better flog the Golf GTis and invest in a 1.4 Polo.

Certainly from a standing start 0-40 mph (you left the Mercs out of it by the way ;)) - between 40 and 60, the diesels can pick up if they are allowed to.    These are not run-of-the-mill diesels though - the majority I see sitting in the outside lane of Heathrow's Perimeter Road are dirty, smelly, noisy and gutless.

I could just as easily quote the Merc 2.0/2.2/2.5/3.2 or maybe the Renault/ Pug/ Citroen 1.6/1.9, Toyota's 2.0 unit is relatively punchy and Honda's 2.2 is brisk. In fact i'd wager you'd struggle against my 110 ASV Octavia, at least if the official VW figures are anything to go by. I'm just not certain what diesels you're referring to as that Octy is 14 years of age and appears to have the Polo licked all roads up.

Okay, point taken - I'll back out gracefully!

It has just been pointed out to me that I wouldn't even be aware of many of the diesel engined cars developed in the last 10 years or so as I have had a very strong bias against diesel fuel.   The diesel engined cars that are easily seen off are the older, noisier variety it would seem.

Still don't like diesels - but that's an opinion.

Don't worry chap I was the same at one point especially after owning a few Golfs, it wasn't until my mate brought a VRS that I had to swallow my pride. Now I've been fully converted especially with the cost of running cars on the ever increasing rise, but if money wasn't an issue it'd be petrol all the way.
