New vRS owner - driver info system question

Featured Replies

I'm usually the one in the family who understands techie things quickly - often without the aid of any documentation - so I'm feeling a little frustrated and foolish that after three days there are still some things I can't work out on my lovely new vRS...

One of these is the traffic sign recognition, which doesn't seem to exist but I thought was a standard feature.  I've seen another forum thread describing a very complicated way to enable it, which so far I don't understand, so I'll return to that later I think.

But the one that's really puzzling me for now is in the driver information display:

At the bottom left, there can be seen a little row dashes, presumably where a number might be displayed.  Above it is the abbreviation mph, and to the right of it a little dial with a small mark at about the 10 to 2 position.  I can find no reference to this in the manual and it never seems to show anything other than the row of dashes.  (When the photo above was taken I was of course stationary, with the engine off, but it always looks like this even when I'm driving)

Can anyone tell me what it means?

Thank you!

My car is a vRS TDI with Bolero, basic MaxiDOT and no sat nav (just in case any of these are relevant).

It's the cruise control - you've obviously got it enabled but not set.  When you set the speed, it is displayed where the dashes are now.

If you look at the left stalk, you'll see the cruise control controls - including a rocker on top of the stalk to turn it on/off.

I'm on mobile so can't see your location but assuming its uk because of mpg/mph.

My understanding is that traffic sign recognition is only available outside of the uk with Columbus. Although it is possible to enable with vcds - I think you may need admundsen/Columbus though.

I may be wrong but I don't think you have traffic sign recognition without Nav?

As yours is the Bolero, (no Nav) I don't think you've got it.

As others have said that's your cruise control switched on but not set.

Traffic sign recognition isn't available without satnav.

Thanks to all of you for clarifying this.  The reason I didn't realise what this is is because I didn't think I had cruise control and so didn't even look at that section of the handbook.  I've checked back to the brochure I was given at the time of ordering the car (it's the October 2013 brochure and I ordered mine in December) and sure enough on the vRS cruise control is listed as a £180 option, which I didn't order.  Yet I've tried it out on the road and sure enough I do have cruise control - and it works quite nicely so I'm glad to have it.

Now I'm wondering what other features I unexpectedly have  - or more worryingly, what features I thought I had but don't.

Thanks again.

Do you know when your car was built?  If it was build week 22 (last week in May) or later then it would be a MY15 car and cruise is now standard.  Easiest way to tell is whether or not you have a flat-bottomed steering wheel, as that is another MY15 change...

Ah right.  Yes - I believe it was built in the first week of June and it does indeed have a flat-bottomed steering wheel.  Are there any other changes I should know about (or is there somewhere they're listed)?

Many thanks

You should have a gloss black lip on the edge of the glovebox latch.  Unfortunately you'll also the vRS badge is missing from the bottom of your steering wheel....

It'll be faster then. Weight saving... [emoji6]

Oh dear - and I was so looking forward to that steering wheel badge...   and as for the glossy lip, I really think the dealer should have warned me about it!

Many thanks - I take it then that apart from the cruise control there aren't any significant functional differences.

Nope, just a few minor changes to the interior.
