Citigo/Aygo Auto Express Road Test.

Featured Replies

In this weeks Auto Express they put a 75 Elegance Citigo up against the brand new Aygo x-pression.The result was quite a resounding win for the Citigo.

But the Aygo looks different :) and has a 5year manufactures warranty and has hopefully Toyota's reliability?

Also the new Twingo rear engine thing is out soon but that looks like a Fiat 500 to me so a little boring.

I do like the quirky looks of the Aygo though.

I agree, good looking car and really like the dashboard but, several press reports agree its quite boring to drive.

I'll go n give this a read i think.

My mates got an 07 plate aygo and reckons its cost him a fortune to run. Its tyres dont last very long and it has to be revved like mad to go anywhere, so its not efficient on fuel either.

He hates it.

Hopefully the new one will be better.

The Citigo got a full 5 stars and the comment " Its also surprisingly practical, incredibly cheap to run and comes well equipped as standard".The Aygo received 3 stars and"But the driving experience let's it down and the car feels cheaper than its rival".

take him to you local dealer with his licence and get him to test drive a citigo, easy conversion then mention what you get per gallon, free servicing (think that is back on) with finance etc and see if he can refuse :)

Hes already got an old one mate aha.

Hes not arsed about finance on an aygo, hes got a GTR on the drive. So an aygo isnt much of an issue lol.

He wants a vw caddy next.

Anybody want an aygo? Cheap? ;).

I had a 2012 Aygo before my Citigo and found it basic in all respects. None of the little extras which the Citigo has, noisier, less fuel efficient, small boot, can't believe the new version is actually more expensive than the Citigo. As for that horrid X at the front - just nasty.

I understand that Toyota are very reliable between recalls. :giggle:

I'm sure that the UP!, Citigo and Mii will all have to have some serious upgrades soon. Newer rivals like the i10, Aygo, C1 and 108 have much more options available. Things that just aren't available for the VAG cars. Stuff like heated front wind screen, heated steering wheel, rear electric windows, leather seats, reversing camera, internet radio, digital climate control, steering wheel mounted multimedia controls, tyre pressure monitoring system etc....

There's just SOOOOOO much missing from the VAG cars that the newer rivals have. Mind you, I still wouldn't switch lol. I love my citigo. But I just so wish they would update it a bit :-(

At least Toyota does do recalls. They admit, if they have a problem, and do whatever they can to solve it. VAG does not. They don´t admit anything and try whatever NOT to help you.

Before my Citigo i had an 2011 Aygo. The engine was more powerful (but noisier), it was very, very cheap to run (i had it for 3 years and 3 months = 96000 km.). The tires were still the ones which came with the car, when I sold it (I used wintertires as well). It did never let me down. I replaced the brakepads and discs at 75000 km (Brembo, cost = 75£). Apart from that, it was just regular service. So, a very good and reliable car. However, the Aygo came out in 2005, so it felt outdated at some points, compared to the Citigo.

Btw, Tyre Pressure Monitioring System is standard on all new Mii/Up/Citigo, as it has become a law in Europe.

ok so not really fair to compair the old argo vs the citigo but I test drove both the argo and yaris when looking for the replacement to the unreliable rubbish of a fiat 500.

Both the argo and the yaris are really really good cars. They do everything very well but they drive like a typical japanese car. Rather dull like a computer game.

I'm not saying the citigo is a dynamic chassis which provides race like feed back, but it is a nice place for the driver.

Saying that when the citigo is up for replacement in a year or so time, I really do not think it will be with another skoda, as I think Skoda are missing their core values at the moment.

I agree the Citigo already looks dated compared to those :(

I get your point that this is about what the rivals offer but... seriously, much of this stuff is hilarious in a car designed be that cheap option. You'd be a good way into Octavia money adding all those options. Perhaps that's the point and it's more about VAG's philosophy in that they'd prefer you look at a larger model that has these things on the options list. After all, they spend millions on researching what "most" people want out of their products.

Also - heated steering wheels - how has the motorist coped this last 100 years? :)

But my point IS that rivals are the same price as the Citigo but DO come with all this extra stuff. If most other car manufacturers (Peugeot, Citroen, Toyota, Hyundai, Renault) can now offer this level of luxury in a city car, for city car money, then why can't VAG? Also, you can't really say "how has the motorist coped the last 100 years without heated steering wheels" because let's face it, we don't NEED to have any creature comforts in our cars at all do we. We have them because it's nice to have them lol. I love my heated seats for example, but do I need them? No of course not. This is the 1st car I've EVER owned with heated seats lol.

Wifey saw the new C1 advert on the TV last night and liked the look - and she's also fond of her gadgets...

There is a reason why Citroen's and peugeot's are packed with extra's...............to get people to buy them.

Trouble is it's just more to go wrong anf it WILL go wrong.

I would not buy another peugeot or citroen unless I fancied the girl at the service reseption because I'd be in there every week!

If most other car manufacturers (Peugeot, Citroen, Toyota, Hyundai, Renault) can now offer this level of luxury in a city car, for city car money, then why can't VAG?

I did try and answer that question in my original reply, suggesting it is perhaps part of VAG's overall strategy / marketing philosophy. German manufacturers have always been knocked due to the paucity of toys as standard. I also reckon there's a grain of truth in what m12MKD above is saying also...

As for the heated steering wheel thing - don't get me wrong I'm options mad and specced everything but the smoking kit on my previous Fabia, but if someone suggested I come up with my dream options list for a car, I wouldn't have even thought to think of having a heated steering wheel. Each to their own and all that, but I reserve my right to take the mickey out of something I find hilarious. :) I honestly only specced the heated seats on the Fabia was so I didn't have empty switch spaces on the centre console. Mind you they are hilarious for switching them on when the mother in law is in the car and making her think she'd peed herself.

Oddly enough, wifey and I went through the "what car next" exercise yesterday (although she's still got about 18 months of the PCP left - but she takes a while to decide :D ).  Fiat 500 - so small inside in comparison, she nearly got claustrophobia.  Went through the Franco-Jap trio and only found one possibility (108 Air-thingy) that was similar to her (almost) fully loaded ASG Citigo but she's not willing to swap the heated steering wheel for the heated seats..even though they were very close on list price.

Looks like another Citigo next time around..unless something better comes out in the meantime.

Well, well, Chris Evans had a new Aygo for 3 days and slatted/hated it and said if it were the last car on the planet he would give up driving!

Claimed his son's pedal car was better.

Well,he has just done a road test on the Aygos sister car the Peugeot 108 Allure in todays Event mag' and guess what?,this car is brilliant!-'A star destined for the big time'.He gives the Aygo one star and the 108 4 stars.

Daughter drove new Aygo yesterday (looking for first car). I was a back seat passenger and the car is so tinny and gutless compared to the Citigo.

I was amazed to find the Aygo/108 does not have a CD player, not even as an option.

About time they got rid of the CD player! I haven't used one in years, most people now buy music online and have phones/mp3 players. I even sold my high-end domestic CD player and use a streaming device instead. CDs are increasingly a niche product.
