Wrong Oil update

Featured Replies

In my previous post I told of the "VW specialist" who had put the wrong oil in my car 10w 40 Semi synthetic.

Pleased to say that I now have 5w 30 Fully synthetic Long Life with a brand new Oil filter installed by my old and trusted VW specialist garage who I should have used in the first place. The car is a 1.2 Tsi (105) Dsg.

The only thing was, when I saw the bill it was as if I'd jumped into cold water :o  :o. £76 for the oil change and filter!! :swear:

It's years since I had an oil and filter change as I always just have the service done on time. I must be still living in the dark ages as I expected around £45.

I used to do my own but am way to old to be climbing around under cars these days.

How much do you pay and is the cost about right? I did take it up with the manager who did all he could to justify the cost. Thing is I do trust these people and am happy to have peace of mind once again.

Harry.

Hi horkin, yep, makes you smart a bit. But that's a pretty normal price and slightly cheaper than some. Glad you had it changed though. Makes sense. How's the old girl going? No, I don't mean your wife!

yeah, I pay about £85 for my skoda dealer to do a "minor" service....

Change of oil and filter (draining to a receptacle, not pumping out) takes 15mins, including jacking one side of the car up. Oil circa £50, MANN oil filter £12,76, plug £3.

Self service all included £65

Four litres of Castrol EDGE FST 5W-30 costs less than £30 from Amazon, a Bosch oil filter will cost about £6.50 from EuroCarParts and a sump plug can be found on eBay for £3 giving a total parts cost of around £40.  On top of that there is disposal of the old oil (probably free to individuals at your local council recycling facility) and SKILLED LABOUR!

Having said all that, like you I would always be inclined to use a trusted independent garage - it doesn't really need a Skoda trained specialist ;)

Oil should be more like £35 and oil filter for £8.

Cheers guys, I have to say I was very surprised at the cost but as you have told me, £40 to £45 for oil and filter, then plug washer  and disposal fee (though I don't think I was charged that on this occasion). Then I was charged 1/2 hour labour and the dreaded VAT. All in all sounds about right.

I don't do any work of this nature on my car any more. A few years back I would have bought the gear and done it myself.

It was interesting that when I went to the garage to have the crappy oil changed, I was asked 'who did the work initially'? When I told them they said 'wow! they have been there years, I thought they would have known which oil to use'.

Which just goes to show how easy it is to trust someone on the basis of how long they have been trading whereas it's always best to get recommendations.
