Came across this in the garden earlier.

 

I wondered if anyone might have any idea of the name / type of caterpillar?

 

I think it might be called a horrible hairy 

Looks like a vapourer moth caterpillar. Apparently the tufts on the back are more usually cream coloured, but can be brown too.
