Apologies if this is an inane question, and I'm sure it has been asked many times before, but what are the rules for fitting towbars on a Mk1 Octavia vRS Estate?  Are towbars a "one-size-fits-all" thing or is the estate different to the hatch / vRS different to any other?

 

I know the vRS exhaust is different but other than that the bumper looks (to me, at least) the same as a "non-vRS".  Is the structure behind the bumper the same on an estate as it is on a hatch?

 

I keep hearing different views (mainly from online vendors) and just wanted to clear it up once and for all.

This is a random set of install instructions for a witter bar, but my removable Bosal was the same, and as you can see, one fits all. just have to make a discreet cut in the bumper for some. http://www.pfjones.co.uk/witter/SK9.pdf

I believe that the towbars are the same across all mk1 Octavias, and you can even get away with a towbar from a A3, etc too.

 

I bought a non-swan neck one from ebay and just needed to cut out a small section of bumper to get it to fit (by design).

yep all tow bars for the mk1 octy are the same and they are very easy to fit

All except for the 4x4 one, think they are a different height or something as they are specific

+1, all the 2wd ones are the same, only different one listed in catalogues are for 4wd variants and scouts.
