Auxiliary belt change?

Featured Replies

I was just looking at my service book as my car is going in for a 90k service on Wednesday and I noticed that there is no mention at all of the Auxiliary V belt in the service intervals! I was just wondering if it is a servicable part or not, I've tried Googling it but can't find anything on any VAG forum, I hope it's not as it looks a biatch to change!

Cheers

By auxiliary belt do you mean fan belt? I think it can be called either?

I assumed that the alternator was driven by the timing / cam belt and that power steering pumps are mostly electric these days?

Your profile doesn't mention what model, age or engine is fitted to your Superb.

At 90,000 miles you'll be getting close to the mileage limit for the cambelt, unless your Superb is already four years old (pre 2010) or 5 years old (post 2010) in which case it will already be due a new cambelt.

Yes I do mean the fan belt/auxiliary belt, for piece of mind I had the cam belt changed at 80k as I feel 120k is along way to go and other VAG marks quote 80k .

The alternator, air conditioning pump and I also believe the steering pump is all driven by the fan belt, only the oil pump is driven by the cam belt, I had that changed as part of the cam belt change which also included a cam belt service kit, I wonder if the fan belt could be part of that!?

I've got a 2.0TDi 170 4x4

Aux belts are down to you, if you have a timing belt done they will use the old aux belt unless you pay for a new belt, you should always get the water pump done as well if you are having a timing belt

Cheers Superbia, just seams a bit strange for a car company not to have a time limit on a item like this, especially as it could be yet another way to make money!

Most other make of cars I've had have always stated a time or milage limit for auxiliary belts.

I had a Passat TDI, always kept it serviced but never had the auxiliary belt changed - big mistake. It broke one day, wrapped itself around goodness knows what, jammed the crank, pistons met the valves and wrecked the engine. It had 215k miles on the clock, never used water or oil and for the sake of about a £15 belt it would still be going today. Sold it as a non runner for £600 so not all lost but lesson learnt - change the belt.

Change the aux belt when you change the cam belt
