1.4 16v Engine Cover/Air Box Issue

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just serviced my wife's recently-purchased 2005 Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v Petrol. Our first VAG car.

I'm sure you're all familiar with the cover but to jog memories:

- The air filter is incorporated in to the plastic engine cover.

- The engine cover locates by pushing down on to 4 studs.

Upon removal of the cover I note a crack in the plastic on the underside, near the filtered air/throttle body aperture.

Anyway, I attempted to refit the cover and now realise why it's cracked.

The cover just won't push down on to the stud nearest the throttle body, this stud is part of the inlet manifold. The cover appears to be making full contact with the throttle body before the stud in question can push far enough in to the engine cover.  I guess in the past a mechanic has attempted to force the cover back on and the pressure against the throttle body has cracked it.

The car has only ever been to Skoda or a VAG specialist by the previous owner so surprised to find this. I've Googled the throttle body part number and it looks to be correct, could it be the wrong engine cover? Did the 75hp and 100hp engines have different sized covers for different sized throttle bodies?

With the cover not located tightly on all 4 studs it flaps about a bit on one corner, the throttle body corner, which just doesn't seem right at all.

I've bought a used replacement cover from ebay already but I may have the same issue with this one not quite fitting correctly. Just waiting on it to be delivered.

Any advice on this is much appreciated!

If its a 2005, then it should be the BBZ etc engine code which had the engine cover with the blacked out skoda logo, is yours like this or does it have the green skoda badge?

edit: at work so i cant see any pictures

I reckon they must have.  Looking at your two pics, it doesn't look like the seal part of the cover will fit over the outside diameter of the throttle body.  Measurement should confirm.

Thanks chaps.

As said, I had already ordered a replacement cover from ebay.

A stroke of luck but it's the correct one for my BBZ engine.

The throttle body pipe/duct is larger than the cover that was fitted to my car so my throttle body sits snugly inside this new cover.

I've no idea how the wrong cover ended up on the car, I guess when the previous owner had Skoda service it there must of been a mix-up in the garage. Both covers have the black Skoda badge/trim.

Oddly, the part numbers on both covers are the same! :S
