LED bulb change query

Featured Replies

Hi all

have to say I'm really enjoying this site and the new superb. After having it 3 weeks I decided to take the plunge and change the halogen DRL bulbs for LED's and bought some off the 'super' company I see so many people here have used.

They arrived today and I quickly managed to take the bulb holders out of the headlamp unit as per the manual, but thats where the manual stops being helpful and I have no idea how to take the old bulb out of the black and orange holder and replace it with the LED bulb. It seems a really tight fit and I'm left wondering how and where the small LED units will fit into the holder once I get the original out??

Has anybody done this and can shed any light (no pun intended!)

thanks in anticipation!

not near my car (pre-FL) so can't get any photos but I think I did it like this:

at each end of the lower grill there's a removable panel - 3x4 inches or so. Pull it firmly and it'll come out

reach in behind light unit and it's held in with a couple of plastic tabs, gently lever one loose and the whole lot comes out and dangles in front of the bumper on the connecting wires

twist the black connector for the DRL bulb and it will come away from the light unit bringing the bulb with it

the bulb is a bayonett type so push it down and twist and it'll come out

put it all back together in reverse - job done.

thanks very much for the quick reply, unfortunately it sounds a bit different to mine.

I've got the bulb holder out of the main headlight unit but can't remove the bulb. there don't seem to be any obvious clips or suchlike.

appreciate the help though, cheers

From what the OP has said so far i think he has a new FL Superb rather than a pre-FL. I thought the new FL cars all had LED DRLs around the outer edge of the normal headlights as every one i've seen so far has had these rather than halogen DRLs. I'm unsure as to where the DRLs are located if LEDs aren't fitted from new.

But back to basics.... If they are the same bayonet style bulbs as in other cars you need to push them in and twist to unlock them from the holder. ;)

Cheers

Dave.

Thanks Dave

it is the FL one and the SE doesn't have the outer DRL's that the Elegance and above has so hence the change of bulb.

from what I can see the DRL on mine is the sidelight bulb and I've got that out (I'm new to this site and not sure how to upload a photo!  ) but I'm literally stuck on how to remove it from the holder.

cheers

Iain

Iain, are you able to send a link to the LED that you purchased - so we can try to help you that way instead?

The more I look at it now, I think I may have got the wrong bulb, but hope to be proved wrong!

When I got the car I think I was expecting the DRL's to be down near the fog light, but they're actually the dipped bulb from closer inspection. Don't get me wrong, they're ok but I would prefer the clean white of an LED and I couldn't run to the Elegance when I was ordering.

Thanks

Those superskoda ones look like they are to replace W5W "wedge" type bulbs, which look like this...

640px-Philips_12V_5W.jpg

Is the bulb in the picture above the same as the one you have in your car?  If so, you just need to pull it out of the holder.  If not, then you have bought the wrong bulb...

Beginning to think you're right, Doh!

Expensive W5W bulbs then, any idea where else I can use them on the car? Interior lights I think maybe, so not a complete waste.

Thanks for your help

Iain

They look  M A S S I V E !!!  I think they're too big to use elsewhere: interior lights, under the side mirrors, internal down-lighters in the rear boot lid (estate only) - ummm can't think of anywhere else...

Send them back, or ebay them?

Only the higher spec facelift Superb's get the LED DRL's infront of the indicators.

Lower spec Superb's get the same halogen set-up as on the latest Rapid and Octavia, this means there are three non-LED bulbs (excluding the indicator) in each headlight cluster.

Dipped beam through a projector, main beam and then a combined side/parking light and DRL bulb.

The DRL bulb operates at reduced intensity when performing the role of the side/parking light.

Skoda being Skoda means their latest manuals are rubbish. For some reason they list all of the fuses but have now decided to remove any detail about the bulb types meaning the only way you'll 100% know which bulb you need is to remove the halogen bulb currenty fitted.

Thanks silver

they are the H7 variant and so I've given up on an LED replacement but was considering changing them for the Philips xtreme vision anyhow.

Trouble is I'm still none the wiser on how the damn things come out of the bulb holder ! There seemed no obvious way of removing the bulb.........
