Brake caliper bolts.

Featured Replies

Hi folks!

First time posting in the forum after getting my vrs mk1 back in April.

Long story short, my front passenger side brakes are squeeling whilst braking under 15mph. So I'm going to take them off and clean everything up and hope that does the trick. Not to mention general maintenance.

However, I am wondering is it super important to tighten the caliper bolts to the correct torque or would just tightening them hand tight suffice?

Thanks!

All bolts should be tightened to the correct torque. Too much you could strip the threads, too little it could come loose.

The small guide pin bolt should be 22 lbft (30 NM). It could possibly done by hand as long as you apply thread-lock to thread (bolt should be renewed or thread locked anyway). The calliper mounting bracket is much tighter. 92 lbft (125 NM).

Chances are tightening the carrier to 125nm will pull the threads out of the hub, ford changed their figure for this reason.

In a nut shell... Hand tight is fine.

Use common sence, try and gauge how tight they were to remove when retightening them.

That is what Haynes and Skoda recommend.
