Blue smoke from under bonnet!

Featured Replies

Hi All.

Trying to figure out what is wrong w/ my Dads car. I'll give a small bit of background first, which I believe is pretty much the problem.

Awhile back at this stage, I was driving my Da's car, I put the her into 1st and when I pressed the throttle the car began to move then splurted and stopped. I eventually got her going and brought her to a mechanic who said the saprk plugs had gone. I had the plugs changed and she ran alright for awhile.

I booked the car in for the NCT (MOT) and she failed on emissions. The emissions reading was supposed to be below 0.5, but was 7.1! So bought back to mechanic, he scanned and said lamdba sensor. The sensor was swapped out and she varied little from 7.1. He then suggested a purge valve but I had enough at that stage andI had a falling out w/ him to say the least.

Today, I turned the ignition key, she went to start, pistons firing, then cut out, and blue smoke was emitted from the gap between the bonnet and the front quarter panel.

Occasionally she will  stall in first when moving off.

Any suggestion? I've read somewhere that a cam sensor could be the issue, or maybe breather pipes, but what do ye think? Cheers

Coolant temp sensor would be my guess for poor emissions. Blue smoke could be oil spraying from split breather pipes.

Smoke is probably a breather pipe as above I think people have had issues with some sort of timing sensor, but the car would generally run rough

Yeah agreed cam position sensor is a possibilty too.

Harpoon,

If the car was stone cold when the blue smoke came out it is unlikely that it was due to an oil leak.

Maybe more likely to be an electrical shorting issue. (check the engine bay fuses and leads from the battery)

Any idea how the smoke smelled? (Plastic/oil) and was it from the drivers or passengers side wing?

A few photos of the engine bay might help too.
