Superb test drive

Featured Replies

Been and test driven a Superb classic pd130 in mystery blue (see pic) today :) ....very nice, goes well and I haven't got the kids knees in my back ...this one may just be coming back home with me next week :D ...did find out one thing my Octy Vrs is a lot lower than the ??/100 rally version and on a long run I actually got 44 mpg out of it but it was really boring driving at between 65/75 on the M4/M5 and being overtaken all the time

That looks very nice Rob. I was talking at work about your car and if it was next year I'd have offered something for it. But with fuel prices like they are, even I cant afford it. I have to say, you do choose the cream of Skoda's for your cars, not the top of the line maybe but always excellent head over heart cars.

Got to admit it was nice to drive and yes it feels big but it handles far better than I thought it would and it accelerates rather nicely as well  without the figures going down to 4mpg on the trip computer, few other nice touches in it as well, 6 airbags, climate controlled glove compartment and cooled travel box in the front armrest with space for two cans:) separate heating/cooling vents for the rear seats, it may be the base model but the spec is good :D

Superb in same colour shot past me at rate of knots on M25 today.... looks good in that colour

good thing in a superb they are so far away in the back seat you nearly have to phone them :D

Can I ask why you are swapping back to diesel so quickly?

Is the vRS not up to towing the van?

Cheers

Hi Lee

Got fed up very quickly with continuously putting fuel in the Vrs 26- 28mpg around town and normal run 36 ish today got 44 but had to try real hard

I haven't even tried the caravan...I put a large-ish trailer on it and it towed it OK. but you could tell it wasn't happy and the mpg dropped by 5 just with that on so towing a van to Cornwall would mean a refill somewhere along the line and it is only 220 miles from here ( i reckon it would be 20mpg probably less)

You know...I can go a week and a half with a full tank of fuel and I drive a 2.0 petrol car. I think it all depends on how you drive the car, in and out of town. On a highway I can easily get 5.5ltrs/100kms.

You're just looking for an excuse to buy another car :D

Hi Mil

All depends where I go ......most days it's two or three mile trips through town and all I get is 28mpg or less yesterday was a 220 mile trip and believe me I had to try REAL hard and I got 44mpg but it was boring sat on the inside lane between 60 and 75 being overtaken by everyone (in 200 miles I overtook one horse box and a tractor) coming back I was stuck in a queue on the M5 for an hour and a half so the mpg for that was awful. with the amount of traffic in the UK and speed cameras everywhere most days you go nowhere fast so I may as well use less fuel and have a load puller for the caravan when I use it.......idea is to keep the looks as they are ...maybe solid alloys like the elegance but just tweek the rest that can't be seen......stiffen the suspension a little (I wont be lowering it) maybe a remap for more torque (find out from Lummox what the clutch and gearbox can safely take)....but NO spoilers, lowering or big big wheels........and the luxury of 37 mpg day to day driving .....Cornwall and back on a tank of fuel with a lot left over :D

octy vrs wheels and green brakes on the superb... u know it makes sense

Unfortunately the Octavia wheels won't fit :(

@Mil - the thing in the UK that really kills the MPG is going up/down hills, plus the enjoyable start-stop nature of driving here during rush hour :(

In Holland (whilst sticking to speed limits, which are 120kph on motorway as opposed to 70 mph in the UK) I got at least 10 MPG more. Although there ARE some bits where the road goes up/down, it's not a proper hill in most places.

As for towing a caravan with an Octy - let's just say the aerodynamics aren't great for caravans, so your MPG drops a fair bit. I could imagine you'd get better MPG sitting at higher revs in a lower gear. Same is probably true from the diesel version, although I don't know what the gearing is like in the Octy 6 speed, only drove a 5 speed one.

Generally speaking though (turbo-)diesels are very suited to pulling caravans as the torque makes it easy to just drive it about without too much fuss. You can certainly use a petrol too, just need to give the engine a chance to have an easy life, but MPG will be worse both on petrol & diesel I'd have said.

On the (really positive) side from your angle, at least there is a type-approved towbar for the Octy vRS models + Superb, unlike for the Fabia vRS :(

Nice looking wheels though they don't seem to know the Superb uses a different PCD.

Just hope they have some with the correct pcd ....they do look nice and easy to clean :D

Looks nice , good tow capableites nose weight 75kg Octy1 60kg max tow 1600kg octy1 1300kg. Just got 34mpg out of my octy2 over 700miles towing 1150kg

I get around 450 miles per tank with around town poodling/driving. On a run its goes to 700-730, and that is sticking around the 70-80 ish mark.

What size tank do they have?

62 litre

So bigger than the octavia then.

Thanks

My best has been 640 on a tankful (without cheating and filling the expansion tank as well) which I was very pleased with

makes my normal 300 on a tankfull look pretty silly :(

Yep.

Even at current prices I can decide to go off on a 2 or 300 mile trip and not have to worry about the cost of getting there.

Much as I would have liked a VRS the fuel bills would be shocking doing over 30k a year
