Help! Loss of power & high pitch whining from engine.

Featured Replies

I think my turbo has failed.

I pulled out of a corner & accelerated hard to get up to speed. But then at the next junction I pulled away & noticed that I had no power & the engine was making a really high pitch whining or whistling.

Its seems that I have no turbo kicking in but the car is still drivable. However, I have no engine warning light & theres no smoke coming out of the exhaust.

Is this a classic sign of a failed turbo? Would it be flagged on VAG COM?

Thanks

Have you checked for a boost leak?

Boost pipe popped off as above ??

No, I thought a boost leak would result in a lot more visible smoke. Do you get a sudden loss of power and a horrible whining noise with boost leaks?

Not to sure about the codes but I wonder if the first one is related to my current engine problem.

Took the car around the block to see if I could recorded the noise - strangly the car sounded normal but I still had no power as if the turbo wasnt working. Still no smoke & no signs of oil (from engine or exhaust)

Update 2:

Well I think it the turbo and I think it's pretty terminal. Was slowly taking the car to a friend for him to take a look at and the engine light came on followed by a LOT of grey smoke from the exhaust. I then lost all power and am now stranded in Droitwich.

So, how hard is it to change the turbo? Can it be done by an amateur mechanic?

Or does anyone know a good place that I can get it done around Worcester?

This news sucks dude was thinking it could be something simple :-(

I've never done it on a fabia but on my 306 it was behind the engine also i had to take an engine mount off and knock the engine forward Seems to be a lot lore space in the fabia maybe you can get to it from underneath ???
