What to look out for MK1 vRS

Had a look but couldn't find anything definitive.

 

Possibly going to have a look at a vRS Saturday/Sunday but wanted to know what to look out for in particular on these.

 

Obviously rust etc is a given but anything else?

Going to have a look at one nearby on sunday but want to make sure all bases are covered with what to look for.

There is nothing really specific to the vRS, you could ascertain when the cambelt was last changed or if the oil pickup has ever been replaced.

I would probably get the cambelt changed anyway to be on the safe side.

 

It does say it has service history so it should be ok.

Go in with eyes wide open, perhaps take a friend with you, go over everything and make sure it all works. Check bodywork thoroughly for signs of accident damage (poor shut lines, filler etc.) . I would not be to concerned about resprayed panels after all the car is 10 years old or more. and be prepared to walk if something does not feel right. There are still plenty of these around, so keep looking for the right one.

It has 50k on a 56 plate so reasonably low mileage.

 

rust etc or oil leaks and we will be gone, had quite a large amount of trouble with a previous VAG car so not taking any chances.

 

anything to look for during a test drive?

Creaking bushes, knocking and clonks when going over bumps. Creaking on bumps will be the ARB bushes, knocks and bangs could be ball joints etc. Make sure the turbo is good, you should feel a good surge in power from 2.5K RPM along with a gentle whistle.

Thats great, out of interest, is it just skodas which have the squeak over bumps caused by ARB bushes?

 

my mum has a vectra estate which if she does not carry a heavy load it squeaks/creaks when going over speed bumps just wondering if this is the same issue?

Check the rear foot well carpets to see if they are damp, there is a common fault that the rear door cards leak - easily fixable.

Drive the car in a higher gear 4th upwards and accelerate hard from about 1700rpm, if you feel any bad vibrations the DMF could be on it's way out.

read about the damp caused by leaky door seals, although it is going to be unusually warm and not rain saturday just to annoy me isnt it....

 

 

so expensives seem to be turbo & DMF

Where do we start.

 

Wishbone bushes, front and rear.

Rear axel beam bushes

CV boots

Rear engine mount in the subframe

leaks behind the door carriers - both front and rear, you need to lift the back seats and lift the carpet which folds up the front and feel the soundproofing at the back.  Just because the carpet is dry doesn't mean it's not leaking.  There will be about 4 gallons of water in the soundproofing before it shows through the carpets.

Rust in the rear arches and tailgate

EGR sticking, or seeping oil.

Intercooler pipes (if they haven't broke already, they will).

the gearbox in general (it's a 6 speed, it'll probably give you trouble at some stage)

Door lock modules (trust me,. they'll go faulty at some stage)

Rear latch - the rear wiper can leak and corrode the rear latch switch.

AC control panel can go faulty

Gearknob paint and gaitor wears easily.

Tandem pump gasket can leak easily.

Power steering pump can fail

Steering angle sensors are also a common fault.

Coolant temp sensor (every Vag car I know has needed one at some stage)

Alternator wire breaking in front of the starter or under the battery.

Went down to have a look at one earlier today, 53k on a 56 plate... Sweet as a nut!

Bought it (well part ex for my fiesta) and have it in my possession.
