Amundsen update not working

Featured Replies

Hi, I have updated the nav data files following the Skoda instructions but now it wont work.

I copied the old data (vers 34) to my computer, downloaded version 40 (single file rather than in parts), formatted and unpacked it directly to the SD card.

When the sat nav boots up it reads the card, the maps appear on the screen with my location and all looks normalt then, after a few seconds, it reverts to an error message ' Please insert a data medium with valid navigation data'. If I'm quick I can go into setting and check the version number, it shows version 40.

I have tried putting the old files back on the card but get exactly the same symptoms.

Any ideas?

The selling main dealer want 1hr labour to even take a look - refunded if it is a Skoda fault!

Many thanks

.

Did you format the card using Windows?

What format did you choose (FAT32 or what)?

Are you using Slot 1 or 2 for the card?

Hi Minimoke,

FAT32 via Windows 7, and have tried both slots. Just as a doublecheck I have repeated the whole formatting and unpacking process via another computer as well.....

Thanks.

Have you tried a music sd card in both slots to ensure they can read the card?
I infer from your post that you are using the original Skoda SD card. Correct?

What is the part number printed on the SD card itself?

I also infer from your original post that you may have already spoken to your dealer. Did you tell them that you have atempted a map update?

Also I forgot to add....

The SD card should have a file called DBinfo.txt and a folder called "markets" in the root directory. There should be no other files/folders present. Is that the case?

Unfortunately I have to go out now for several hours now so cwon't be able to pick this up again until later (unless you've been sorted by then).

Hi Minimoke,

Both SD slots are working fine with music cards.

The card is original, and this is the first update. Part no 5EO O51 236A. Folders/file are as you describe, both before and after updating.

Lastly, yes I have told the dealer, they took little notice other than saying they need to see the car. BTW I popped in at another dealer who seemed interested, but more as they haven't actually updated one yet so were keen to know more about file size, time to download etc rather than actually helping me!

Thanks again.

Ok. I would forget about the update and concentrate on restoring the original files. I know you have tried this previously, but you will need to do this again anyway if you eventually decide to return to the dealer.

Remember you MUST use the original Skoda supplied SD card when doing the following. I note that the part number for the card is for a V1 card rather than a V2 (same part number suffixed with C instead of A). V1 should be OK, but as a matter of interest exactly how old is your Octavia 3?

(1) Reformat the card once again This MUST be FAT32 and this time I suggest you do a full reformat rather than a Quick Format (this will be an option in the Windows 7 dialogue). This might take some time.

(2) I recommend that you turn off your anti virus program at this stage (if you can).

(3) Copy the  version 34 backup files from your computer back to the card. The only files/folder in the root directory must be DBinfo.txt and  "markets".

(4) Open the file DBinfo.txt in Notepad and write down the contents. Do NOT re-save the file from within Notepad. Just cancel and exit  Post the contents of the file here (there is only a limited amount of data in the file)

(5) Turn your anti virus program back on if you turned it off at (2)

(6) Put the card back into slot 2 of the unit and restart the navigation and see what happens (You can use either slot normally but Skoda make a thing about using slot 2 so lets stick with their instructions for the moment)

Now if the navigation does not start correctly I'm afraid there is a possibility that the map update may have bricked the special reserved area of the card. It may be a head unit malfunction but if its reading music and the nav worked immediately before the map update then the odds must be on the card being faulty rather than the unit.

If the card is u/s then you will need a new card. It cannot be fixed. Skoda will try and charge you £230 for one.

It will not take the dealer an hour to diagnose. They can try a spare SD card - if it workes then your card is obviously shot. If it does not then the head unit is u/s and this is a warranty problem for them to fix. They may try and calim that they cannot try a spare card as (1) the card is tied to the head unit (it is not as others on this forum, myself included, can testify)  or (2) using their spare card will "use up" one of the 7 licences on the card (this is also suspected to be untrue but has been circulated by the VW, not Skoda, marketing department). Believe me I've not met a dealer yet who really seems to know anything about the update/security system - its all smoke and mirrors.

As you have told the dealer that you have a nav problem connected with the map update I suspect they will claim that you (or your computer) have screwed up the update process, and therefore say you will have to buy a new card. This happened to me recently, but I have found another couple of people who have also experienced exactly the same problem as a by product of the update. The suspicion is that the head unit may write to the reserved area of the card after the map has been updated, and the write does not complete properly. The user has no way of correcting or recovering from such an error. Restoring the back up files will not fix the problem as the underlying security system will have been compromised.

Maybe I'm being too alarmist and restoring the back up data will fix the issue, but if not I'm afraid you could have a bit of a fight on your hands with the dealer.

Let us know how you get on. If all else fails you may be able to get a replacement card off ebay, but that is a potential can of worms and I'll leave discussion of that  that for another day.

Best of luck

Just re-read my earlier post and I forgot to point out that the SD card has to be physically unlocked via the slider on the side of the card before step 1, and locked again before step 6.

Apologies for the oversight.

Thanks for all your help, returning the card to version 34 didn't fix the issue.

Tha dealer has confirmed the card is corrupted so a new one is now on order.

Out of interest has anyone successfully updated their maps?

I have successfully updated mine.

I did not format the card just made a backup then deleted the files and copied the new ones on it.

Thanks for the update. As a matter of interest is the dealer replacing the card under warranty or are you having to pay? Skoda UK refused point blank to replace mine when the same thing happened to me.

I have had one failed update version 36 to 40 (bricked the card like yours and restoring the backup did not work). Updated the replacement card generally OK except map for Ireland is suspected to be corrupt.

I have now obtained a cheap card from ebay to experiment on and this has demonstrated to me random 7zip errors when unpacking directly to the SD card. Unpacking to the PC seems more reliable although this is contrary to instructions.

I'm not sure of the cause of these unpacking errors, but it suggests to me that maybe 7zip somehow corrupted the card rather than the head unit firmware as I previously suspected. There is a lot of guesswork here on my part but I continue to experiment.

aki78 - good to know that someone has been successful. Formatting appears to be the key difference.

Minimoke - I hope it will be warrenty however have agreed to discuss it later with them. First priority is to get it working again, it is possible there is another / different fault.

Thanks

I also updated from version 36 to 40.

I downloaded the big archive and extracted to my computer with WinRAR (http://www.winrar.com/).

Then I copied the extracted files from my notebook (with Windows XP) to the card.

Everything went fine.

I did followed instuctions to the letter worked first time

At work I've not found 7zip to be particularly reliable at extracting zip files created using another product. Windows Vista, 7 and 8 can extract zip files with no additional software.

Racman - did you reformat the card?

The Skoda instructions suggest either this or deleting the old files.

It appears as though the issue may relate to formatting?

Mannyo - Apologies I'm not that familiar with zipped files however my laptop didnt recognise the file extension (7z) so didnt know what software program to use. However using 7zip it appeared to unpack OK, certainly no errors were reported!

Thanks

I didn't reformat my card either, just deleted the old stuff and unzipped the while file straight to it with 7z and no issues.

Ok thanks everyone, it seems as though Skoda's instructions need to change to remove the formatting comment.

The question is do I dare to update the new card when it arrives tomorrow???
