Difference between 1.4 and 19.Tdi

Featured Replies

Hi guys this is my first proper thread so go easy on me :P

On saturday i have a test drive at my local skoda garage in a 1.4 100BHP Elegance. I have also had a drive in my brothers 1.9TDI 100BHP Elagance.

On paper these cars are the same, but obviously the torque on the 1.9tdi is more. When you put your foot down in the 1.9tdi you have a bit of 00ooomph behind you :). But since these 2 on paper are the same, as in horepower and in top speed and in also 0 - 60 mph. Is the 1.4 any different? Do any of you have a 1.4 100bhp elegance, how does it fair? Is there anything when you put your foot down? Do you have to Rev it higher because of the lower tourque. Any help/advice would be most appreciated :D

Many Thanks

Si

Biggest difference will be the size of the fuel bill

For what it's worth, I bought a 1.4 16v elegance. It's a lovely car and a surprisingly refined cruiser on motorways. But the power output is peaky and the torque feeble, which makes it harder work to drive in town and on give-and-take roads. If the car was stolen tomorrow I would replace it with the diesel.

And yes, with the diesel there will be fewer visits to the filling station.

Sal

I had the 1.9tdi elegance, lovley car used to see 70mpg regulary.would still have it now but needed a bigger car.

My flatmate has a Fabia 1.4 16V with 100bhp - it's a good car for the money but don't expect it to be a rocket ship. You really need to rev the engine to get the most out of it since peak torque arrives at 4400rpm but keep it above this and it will surprise you with what it is capable of. There is not the diesel shove in the back but it can and will rev happily to 6400rpm with little complaint (I'd like to see a diesel do this ;):rofl: )

In my opinion it is a competent car and will hold its own in many driving situations and can even see off those numpty creatures in their ch4vved up Nova / Corsa / Saxo at the traffic light grand prix (Not that I recommend this sort of bahaviour on public highways - I am just telling it like it is ;) )

In summary my preference would be the diesel for its greater flexibility in real world driving conditions. - If you want a fast car try the Octy vRS   :D:thumbup:

Thanks for the replys guys and gals :)

So since its peak is more revs, does this mean i would have to ref the 'bits' off it to overtake? is it a good over taker?

Sorry for being dim, but this info is helping with my decision :)

Yep , the 1.4 16v likes (needs) to be revved quite hard to get decent performance.

The tdi doesn't and is a much more relaxed drive

Get a tdi you won't regret it

or if you really want I've got an octavia vrs for sale

Torque, go for the torque  its that which gives you the "effortless" feel when overtaking and keeps the fuel consumption down because the engine's not working so hard.

I drive a lot of petrol engined rental cars and they always feel like something's missing after the way a diesel delivers its output (even my old Pug XUD7 could still muster some grunt), the fuel consumption's just a bonus - surf the torque every time me!!

If that Formula 1 screaming banshee feel when pressing on gives you a buzz, then the 16v is designed for just that so go for it.

8 valves for torque, 16 valves for power

Ya pays yer money and takes yer choice! :)

If you are in the correct gear in the 1.4 16V (which will mean dropping a cog or two) then overtakes are no problem if you have enough clear road - it will need revving to get the best out of it though. The TDi should not require such a thrashing to get the best out of it since it delivers its peak torque much lower in the rev range and has almost twice the amount available (TDi 173lbft 16V 93lbft - I think) making it more flexible for everyday driving. The diesel will also be better machine for 'in gear' acceleration (e.g. 30-50mph in 3rd).

Whichever car you go for you will be getting a capable machine that should not let you down.

.

Thats right - 3rd gear becomes a damn fine gear to overtake with - no changing mid manouvere and it'll go from 30mph to 60mph in standard form nice and quick. When remapped it does this faster but keeps going to nearly 80mph.

IIRC, the best gear in the octy is 2nd? I guess this must be good for say 20mph to blat up to 65ish? :D

Only 65mph - you're not trying hard enough then  It will do at least 70mph in second :D

Third in the Octy is good for well over a ton (on a priviate road mind ;) )

Apart from being a much better car to drive, another little incentive to go for the tdi - resale values are supposed to be much better.

Why the sad face because you can only buy combi's ????

The combi PD100 is a bloody cracking motor, stick on a tuning box and to quote my Rover 600 driving mate "it runs away with you" !

The downside of buying the TDI Elegance is that they're rarer than hen's teeth which does limit choice a bit and also pushes up 2nd hand prices. If you can handle not having all the toys, the Comfort with the 1.9 TDI is more available, but I'd personally hold out for an Elegance :D

Have you tried the National search on Skoda.co.uk? Or Autotrader? It wasn't clear if you were buying new or used :D

Chris

My best friend has the 1.4 16v, and it doesn't rev to 6,400 rpm, it hits about 5,800rpm before the limiter kicks in if I remember correctly, just drove it yesterday.

The other option (and I'm surprised Mil didn't mention it ;)) would be to go for the 2.0l Elegance which will be more refined than the diesel or the 1.4-16v, but still have plenty of torque for relaxing driving and effortless overtaking! :D

Chris

If you want a fast car try the Octy vRS   :D:thumbup:

Or even the Fabia vRS.

The 1.9TDi PD isn't a bad motor for a relaxed drive to the shops either.
