VRS TFSI - Hesitancy/Misfire

Featured Replies

This morning I had the rare opportunity to drive the VRS as it is usually driven by my wife. I noticed from cold that there was a lot of hesitancy in all gears at low revs, it felt very much like a misfire. I back off the throttle and it seemed ok so it appears to be happening under load. By the time I'd dropped my wife at the station and got home (about 2 miles round trip) the EML was flashing orange. Switched off, retrieved the gendan VAG code reader from the garage, plugged in and it showed no codes (guessing this is because the code reader is only a cheapy).

This has only just started happening today and I have sent a PM over to a local VCDS owner to ask if I could plug the car in and see what is stored in the ECU.

Things that I've changed since buying the car in February:

Feb - New 'red' coil packs purchased from Awesome Gti (it had a rough idle when I bought it - and still does have).

Feb - New pipercross panel filter from Awesome Gti

Feb - Cambelt and waterpump change at Warrington main dealer

I have been searching through the forum for the past two hours and read a few threads that sounded similar in symptoms but alas none concluded the story so I'm still in the dark.

Things I'm going to try this morning:

Swap all coil packs back to originals (if I find them in the garage).

Drink coffee whilst muttering bad words about the car...

Any suggestions on what may be the cause all very welcome, being unemployed has the added benefit of time to investigate this in the nice weather :)

I should take a look at my old thread below as you have exactly the same symptoms I had:

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/273037-vrs-20t-fsi-stuttering-at-idle-and-on-acceleration-up-to-2000-rpm/

Turned out to be the inlet valves clogged up with carbon deposits which meant stripping the inlet manifold off and getting in there and doing a manual clean... VCDS scans don't show anything when this happens!

Thanks for the reply, I was in the middle of reading that thread - great write up btw. The really odd thing is, the murmur on idle has been there since I got it and not really noticeable anywhere else when driving whereas the hesitancy has only been noticeable today.

I suspect I've got a combination of the symptoms you had plus something new. I've just swapped the coil packs over and about to test drive it, watch this space.

Rough idle can usually be sorted by replacing the PCV valve, a v.cheap and easy* fix, well known issue.

*very easy, as long as you can get the engine cover off!

So, short test drive has proved that it was a coil pack, not sure which as all 4 swapped at the same time. The coil pack that has failed only lasted 5 months and less than 5K miles, hmmm, glad I kept my receipt :)

Ive been told by my local VAG specialist that the TFSI's do not run totally flat on idle and that all of them have a slight murmur... Even after the clean out I still get it on mine!
