Columbus question

Featured Replies

Just won a columbus on eBay! My question is what else do I need to fit this to my 08 plate octavia vrs pre fl, what facia do I need and any wires or plugs to fit this? And will I have any drainage issues on my battery?

Thanxs in advance ian

On an 08 plate it will not need a CAN gateway upgrade. The cut-off for this was 07/57 era. My 08 plate already had a suitable gateway, and I have had no battery issues whatsoever in the last two and a half years.

Depending on which Columbus you have got, you may or may not need a new fascia surround.

It should work straight out of the box, but the gateway will need coding to tell the rest of the car that a navigation unit is fitted. If you have maxidot, it won't show in the display until the gateway is coded.

Wiring is exactly the same, simply unplug whatever you have now, and plug in the Columbus.

where wuld I get a facia from?

Mines a 2013 model if that helps, be good to find some1 in Essex who can help me code it in as I have the maxidot!

Is it have getting the original unit out?

Best place to get facia is probably local dealer. Price is variable depending on which one you need - from a few pounds to c£55 for vRS trim in facelift models.

For fascia...better is eBay then a local dealler. You csn save allmost 50% of price...

For geteway...at local dealer workshop...they can do an upgrade of firmware in a geteway for earlier car models (<08) so there is actually no need to get newest geteway. This is possible...

Even now, there is a patch avsilable (modified firmware, please Google for it) for Columbus that can disable power drain, so you can even then just flash a Columbus...without touching geteway....

Cheers guys for all the info :) one last thing is where do most of u put the gps antenna on the car?

Also in the car I have the stream mp3 standard head unit, when I reverse a pic of a car comes up on screen with little indicators how close I get in reverse!! Will I loose this

The OP has said his car is 2008 so no change to the gateway is necessary.

Likewise you will NOT have to put any modified Columbus firmware onto the unit as the gateway fully supports the head unit on standard firmware.

What Nikolaidis says applies to 2007 and earlier models only.

Almost true Mike, but I needed modified firmware on my 2008 in moving to a newer firmware, but not because of battery drain or the age of car, but simply because the age of the Columbus which is also 2008. As you say though a 2013 Columbus in a 2008 car will have no issues.

Afraid so unless you also upgrade the parking controller (http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/261422-pdc-ops-advice/) or fit a special box (see: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/316663-polar-fis/).

But the loss is far less of a loss than the resultant gain from the Columbus..

ow ok who? And are they expensive?

250ish. Hopefully Phil-E will come along and add where. He has just bought one.

Yes, as I wrote in brackets, for cars (<08) ;)

Additional for antenna...Stream uses a single lin in antenna and Collumbus uses a dual-line in antena, ans connectoes (plug) is not the same.

So if you want roof aerisl GPS antenna then you need extra new cable (dual-line), same story is with Bolera (like on SuperB 2).

But if you want to keep existing roof antenna (FM) like it is and avoid pullung new lines, then is easier to buy a adapter for existing antenna lune that will plug into Columbus and for a GPS antenna to use small under-dash antenna that is fully working fine and is eady to mount and cheap for buy (cca.10 EUR).

This is adapter you need for existing antenna line (also very cheap):

It comes with a GPS antenna to plug in so I assume u just put it under the dash somewhere hidden? And my fm aeriel will just plug straight in to the columbus?

No your FM antenna plug will not plug straight into Columbus...plug an jack are not same! Please read in detail my last post...;)

Your FM antenna will fit on the Columbus. Mine did.

As already said, you need to get it on the correct one of the double connector on the Columbus to get FM reception.

GPS antenna will plug straight in to the blue connector on the Columbus.

Mine is a 57 (MY08) car.

When I fitted the Columbus I needed to flash a firmware fix. Not for battery drain but for the maxidot. It had a problem where is would get stuck in the audio or navigation menu until I switched the Columbus off.

nah car already has maxidot on it, just need columbus coding to the maxidot :)

You are welcome... that is how I did it on my vRS since I lost a satellite reception of satellites via Aerial antenna in one momment due to corosion (water), common issue.

But after a fix it is back ok now...

Bought recently new aerial (GPS, FM, GSM) for SuperB as well;
