VRS Clutch replacement DIY - any tips ?

Featured Replies

Started work on getting daughter's old VRS road worthy prior to sale. It was getting old and unreliable (112K miles) and she is self-employed and really needs her car for work and so she bought a nearly new Fiesta.

Yesterday I replaced all the brake disks & pads and the rear LH caliper - handbrake lever was seized.

Next job is the clutch - slipping terribly.

Not done a clutch on a car before, only Landrovers.

Anyone done the clutch change on a VRS ? Any tips ? The manuals say support engine from above with a hoist. Can it be done with a support from below the engine ?

They arnt a bad job to do, just a heavy 6 speed box.

Yes it can be supported from the bottom.

18mm ball joints can be abit of a pain, driveshaft nuts can be awkward sizes, multi splinted at the gearbox end. Rest is pretty straight farward I guess!

Is the flywheel the same as on a Golf with the 6 speed, you need the flywheel in a set position to get box past it?

Not that I can remember. Can't say I've ever timed the flywheel up on a golf either, mk4 or mk5, changed both!

Flywheel will only fit on one way as the mounting holes are not evenly spaced. And as mentioned the 'box is (insert expletive) heavy.

And as a tip I guess, find the correct hole when it's on the floor as said above it will only fit into the crank one way and once your on your back messing about holding a fairly heavy flywheel while struggling to get one bolt it, it could get frustrating!

It's not a bad job to do really. Just need 4 hands, plenty of pound coins and a swear box. With that you should be all good.
