Got a new cycle carrier for the Citigo

When I bought my Citigo I thought about the Skoda cycle carrier solution, but a friend pointed out it was going to cost me rather a lot of money each time I take my bike in the car, given I only do it a handful of times a year. Fair play.

Then I read here that some guys are taking the wheels off and transporting their bikes inside the car. I tried that. Had hell of a job getting my hybrid bike in, even after taking the wheels off. I have mudguards and they got well and truly bent. On arrival I had the oily job of putting the wheels back on and sorting the mudguards out.

I only ever transport one bike so did some research and came up with the Saris Solo, http://www.saris.com/product/solo. An amazingly light and small bike rack. Nowhere says it fits the Citigo, someone mentioned it in the VW Up! forum but didn't follow up - the usual 'I'll report back when I've tried it' then they disappear.

Thought I'd give it a go - could see no reason why it wouldn't fit given the Citigo has a pretty standard hatchback, unlike the Up!

Basically it works fine. The metal clips don't affect the paintwork because of the angle they're held at when taut - I made sure I cleaned the paintwork under where the feet go to avoid jiggling grit around during the journey. It works during the journey far better than you might think when you first see it.

The cost? I bought it from Tredz for £44 delivered. Pretty good I thought.

Hope this is useful to somebody. I know I'd have appreciated it when I was searching a couple of months ago!

Hi Feetbet, Had a look at this and am quite interested, is it possible you could post to Manchester as a bit far to collect? Are instructions included with that too?

Thanks.

The hooks align so that the flat surface doesn't seem to actually make contact with the paintwork and I haven't noticed any scratching on the edges of the boot door. I wasn't careful enough making sure I mounted the bike in such a way that it doesn't make contact with the boot door while driving - got some marks, but fortunately they weren't permanent. I caused much more damage previously trying to cram my bike into the boot itself - very hard getting a mountain bike in without making contact with the bodywork at some point, even using a decent boot liner.

Thank you for your answer. Could I ask you to measure the outer distance between the two arms holding the bike? I would like to carry a kids bike on the carrier, but I'm concerned that the distance is greater than the length of the main bar on the bike.

Which one of those style bike carriers make sure you get the tension right on the straps otherwise you might end up bikeless.

Also I can't comment on this one, but these style racks do mark your paint work, I've not used one since my old Pug 206.

I will agree that Skoda's rack for the roof is very expensive!

Like sgcf, I only transfer my bike by car a few times a year. I've bought the same carrier, the Saris Solo, and have found it to be excellent. It is straightforward to attach to the car and is ideal if you have one bike to carry. The first time I used it there was some bumping against the rear of the car but that was down to my poor positioning of the pedals on my bike rather than any design fault with the carrier. Full marks from me!

Many thanks for posting your info on the Saris bike rack. I just fitted a Solo to my shiny new Citigo and it works a treat.

I commute with a bike on the back most days, so I have also disabled the rear windscreen wiper to avoid burning the motor out by mistake (that's what I did with my previous car). If anyone's interested it's #14 in the drivers side fuse box (4th from the right on the top row). Source: http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/aktion/Attachment.html?attachmentId=713381

Scgf nice one I have been looking a while now at cycle carriers for my Seat Mii to carry my mountain bike occasionally. I also am very frustrated too at people who say they will follow up with a review then never do so thank you very much.
