Adblock or Adblock Plus?

Featured Replies

Which should I use?

I want to block adverts chiefly on web pages.

I do not use Facebook, Twitter etc.

PC runs Vista (yes, I know!) and Chrome.

I am not computer savvy and would appreciate any guidance.

Thanks

If they are free try them both and see which you prefer both are chrome extensions, I run ghostery and https everywhere on chrome but I have never used adblock or adblock plus. Seems like adblock plus gets better reviews so i will give it a bash myself . would definitely recommend ghostery though the amount of tracking cookies some site have is quite amazing.

I use Adblock plus and Adbook extra as well as Ghostery on FF. No REAL PROBLEMS.

Have used adblock plus for years now.

The web now looks very strange to me on computers without it.

I also use NoScript but I'm paranoid. But possibly I'm paranoid since I know about this stuff.

Thank you Bian, VWD, Aspman.

Adblock Plus installed.

Try Ghostery as well - I find it helps stop the trackers and a few pop ups. https://www.ghostery.com/en/

Adblock Plus FTW. I used to use noscript but gave up on it. Not looking at dodgy enough sites to need it now

Not that I visit dodgy sites but I prefer using noscript and then allowing stuff, once you get a list built up it's pretty non-intrusive.

I have

On the Router

Open DNS setup to block various ad host such as google ads etc (blocks about 90% of ads on the iPhone etc)

On my laptop

Adblock Plus

No-Script

Flash Block

This in combination makes the internet a nice quiet place.  It isn't actually just because I don't want to see ads, I actually feel guilty about some sites not getting the ad revinue and will try to give them money in other ways (ie freedom here) the main reasons are security and bandwidth, when you only have 1.2mb/s to play with flash ads in particular are a little wearysome.

How come you got these installed on devices if you are blocking at router level?

How is OpenDNS for speed?

The OpenDNS stuff works really well and is quick enough, but it doesn't block everything and you can only list 25 domains to block manually or use the categories (blunt instrument).  I did setup DNS server on my MacMini but then decided it was too much like hard work as the controls are pretty simplified on the GUI and the CLI isn't well documented.

Tempted to get a Raspberry PI to run a dedicated DNS server on debian etc.

The setup with ABP etc is mainly because I use my laptop all over the place, including on some internet connections that block a 3rd party DNS and redirect to their own.
