Any one know the Best way to get maximum fuel efficiency in vrs?

Featured Replies

In light of all this high fuel prices and the threat of a blockade, I was wondering if there is someone out there that could advise on the best driving style to get the best mpg out of my fuel in my fabia VRS. I have been known to drive it quite ruggedly and feel I might benefit at this dodgy time by learning a new driving style to maximise efficiency.

Any help would be greatful

Change gear at about 2500 rpm and don't go above 70mph.

Leave plenty of room from the car in front so you don't have to brake and accellerate as much.

Change to a 1.4tdi

No sharp accelerating or braking. Correct use of the gears and on a motorway stick to 55-60mph.

It got me my 66.8mpg (which I'm quite pleased about)

Change gear lower than that so you dont use the turbo ;)

And the 1.4tdi isnt that much different in fuel comsuption.

Soooo steady with the throttle and keep to the speed limit!!

just pootle along.... keep plenty space between you and the cars around... don't accelerate or brake too much... keep the revs low.....change gear lower... and drive smoothly!!

Managed a 'reported' 70 mpg outta my Octy TDi on a 35 mile trip once by doing that :D

Not nearly so much fun as booting it tho ;)

When I'm just bimbling around in traffic I actually normally change at 1900.

Ok , so this is in an octavia tdi rather than a furby but the principle is the same.

I did get up to 73 after 50 miles once , but then I was into a city centre and it soon dropped to about 60

I always keep to the speed limit!!!!;)

drive everywhere in 6th gear, as long as you're doing at lest 35 mph :)

Don't labour the engine to too high a gear. I find I get better economy in motorway roadworks at 1500rpm in 5th rather than say 1250rpm in 6th. I'll stick it in 6th when going downhill for that extra couple of mpg.

My car is only 3 months/2500 miles old however so the engine is still quite tight but it's getting better every day.

Ive thought the same and changed my driving style. I try not to rev over 2k, which isnt that hard actually unless you pull out in front of a car going a bit faster than you thought- so plan ahead ;) I put it in 5th at 30 when cruising and just think theres an egg under the accelarator pedal.

Ive average 60-61mpg doing this. Dont how accurate the trip computer is, but ive done 75miles since I filled up, the fuel gauge is still at the top and it says I have 515miles to go.

Also not been on any random drives :(

Hmmm. I'm concerned that driving at too low revs will just coke up the engine and generally not do it any good?

I try to change just over 2k rpm for max efficience. Accelerating swiftly at about half throttle seems best. And smoothness is the key - I hardly ever go straight from gas to brake...

I can get 55 ish pootling about. Or 52 driving normally... Guess which I go for ;)

I've averaged 48mpg since my service, generally driving normally, and a good few miles giving it beans! Thats why I love the car

I've also decided to change my driving style due to the cost of fuel. Filled up today nd it cost me

Think yourselfs lucky guys, try running a CTR with the way the petrol prices are going. I have been trying my best of late for economy(which defeats purpose of type R) and the best i have had to date is 370 from one tank, but that is driving it at silly low speeds, which is bordering on unbearable.

On average i think i am gaining 300 at present mid week, and 220 at the weekend, which has not happened of late cos i am skint.

Someone buy my CTR so i can get meself a Vrs, i crave 50+MPG :)

Paul.

this will change once its run in! mine wouldn't run at low revs in 6th without feeling as if its in pain when it had the mielage on it that yours has! I would do the same as you... but once you've got 10,000 miles under your belt it will happily tootle at tickover in 6th .. (as long as you don't wanna go uphill ;)

When you reach a downhill stretch of road stick it in 6th and only accelerate ever-so-slightly, works for me.

Use overrun and rev 1400-2000, being careful not to let the engine labour.

On a 50 mile run through two city centres I managed to get upto 72 and averaged about 64 for the journey.

Most importantly, USE OVERRUN!

why cant i get anything like this consumption :(

Just watch the trip readout on the mpg setting you'll very soon see where to let off the loud pedal.......Got 44mpg in my octy Vrs doing just that. ....ruddy booring though

i do and i get 53 max on a run i have had over 60 but that was with the gf driving around scotland

Ever wondered why HGV drivers never slow down to let you in when you are coming off a motorway slip road ?

Maintaining a constant throttle position on flat roads is key.

When roads have inclines, you can do one of two things (seems to work out about the same)

1) on downhills keep around the same speed and get extremely high mpg, then on the uphill you will need to apply more throttle (hence low mpg) to maintain speed

or

2) on downhills build up a little extra speed - your mpg will still be higher than average (but not as high as if you were just maintaining same speed), then on the uphills you wont need to apply so much throttle.

As per everyone elses recommendations, smooth and gentle

through 2 city centres ?

thats incredible. Im not doubting you, but as someone elses post driving with mpg at the forefront of my mind i have never achieved anything like that.

In fact I could only ever see 64 average on a purely downhill stretch !!

How many miles has your engine done, im only on 3k still ...

Through Leicester city can consistently get 55 if you get the lights right, without driving too differently if you look ahead. 40-odd mile run to Warwick (granted slow and dull) then through Warwick (which is always where it drops). Can hit warwick at over 70mpg if you drive like a b1tch!

The cars on about 11k now, but I started seeing good returns about 6K.

Edit: When I say drive like a b1tch, I mean it! :thumbdwn: Have only seen over 70mpg once.

i think cruise would help a great deal
