Diesel gauge never full

Featured Replies

Hi folks

When I fill my car up with diesel no matter what I do I can't get the diesel gauge to show full. It only ever looks 3/4 full on my 2.0 diesel. I get about 450 miles in it. The diesel pump cuts off and I give it a few more clicks but the gauge still doesn't read full. What's the point of the extra bit on the dashboard gauge if it never gets used?

Maybe it gets confused by you using the Petrol Pump to fill it with diesel and then looking at the Petrol Gauge in the car.

Tigermad, your car sounds like a right lemon, don't think there's been an O3 with so many problems. If I were you if be cutting my loses and getting shut.

Lemon? The stop start was user error. Also the headlight assist seems normal. What makes it a lemon?

You just seem to have problem after problem with it. A fuel gauge that only goes to 3/4 is certainly a fault. Although going off your other posts I'm starting to doubt what you're saying in this thread.

I have booked the car in for the gauge and sat nav be looked at.

Sorry. Thought this was a forum where you can ask questions. I have spent a lot of money on a new car and I wanted to check if a few niggles were normal. Not quite sure why you seem to have it in for me.

Hi Tigermad,

I understand your pain. Just have it seen by the dealer and call Skoda customer support uk and register a case with them.

Skoda CC team is really good and they will sort it out for you.

It's fairly common for people only to be able to put 42 litres or so in when it's showing near empty but that does usually take the gauge up to full.

Not sure if it is the gauge or the tank. Hopefully garage will find out for me.

Not considered Off Topic i hope, a question to anyone that might know

Can you 'Vent' the fuel tank in Diesel Octavias when doing long trips to increase the range by getting more diesel in at fill ups ?

Hello. Cars in the garage. They can see they're is a problem but haven't got the foggiest what's causing it. They have referred it to the skoda network to find out if anyone else had the problem to try and find a fix. They are keeping it a few days.

Getting them to agree its faulty is a good start. That's not always easy.

Yep, most dealers seem to think that the cars are faultless and it is all down to user error!

Shame that in most instances they are incorrect.

Update from dealer. They have tried a few things and they think it is the fuel tank. They tried one out of another vehicle. They are going to keep the car in a few more days to fit it once it comes in. Let's hope this fixes it.

Personally I'm not happy at anyone "overfilling" their tank.

My question was not about anyone being happy about it.  & you are right to be concerned.

(some of us do it regularly on long trips in petrol cars, but would not 'Vent' and then park up.)

There is Button on a Mk2 Fabia to allow you to do a 'Venting'.

Can you vent a Octavia Mk3 Diesel ? was the question.

Sorry for the Off Topic.

Car still in garage. Have registered a case with Skoda UK. Have now been told by the dealer the fuel tank is on back order and they have no idea when it will be in. They are not 100 percent convinced it will fix the problem. The mechanic seems to think one of the sensor arms in it is slightly bent and it may be causing a problem. I have been given the choice of having my car back or keeping the courtesy car for the moment. Even though the Fabia is a fuel guzzler I have decided to keep it for a few more days until I can get an update on the tank. I have also raised an issue about my sat nav freezing problem I mentioned on another thread. Skoda UK will call me back by Monday to let me know what is going on.

Seems a bit extreme to change the whole tank and not just the sender unit....perhaps the O3 tanks are completely sealed?

This was my first thought...

Wonder why just the arm can't be changed.

Missing my Octavia so much and it's only been a week without her. Not the same without bluetooth and the beep when you put it in reverse. Not to mention the lack of power.

I used to have a Vauxhall Vectra (worst car ever but don't start me on that one) and used to "fill it" to the point where the pump clicked off.  The fuel gauge only showed about 1/2 to 3/4 full.  Dealer changed everything from the filler cap to the fuel lines except one thing - the tank.  It turned out the tank which was plastic had 'imploded' so had a large dent that meant I could never get a tank full of fuel and the gauge never appeared full.  Eventually the tank was changed which resolved the problem.

Think yourself lucky it imploded and not exploded!
