Lost keys

Featured Replies

Hi all, lost my car keys which I think must have fallen out of my pocket in a taxi last night. I have no idea of taxi number or anything so can't track it down to check. So, has anyone got advice as to what happens to lost property found in the back of cabs? It wasn't private hire so can't go back to taxi company, do the drivers hand lost property to police? Or will there be a taxi licensing office somewhere?

If I can't get them back, what do I need to replace? Am I right in thinking vcds can't program the immobiliser module in a new key, which needs doing at the dealer?

I have the spare key and a number of codes that are with the spare if this makes a difference?

Any advice gratefully received.

I'm a taxi driver, hackney (picking up off local ranks) but operate independently ( I don't drive for a company etc)

If anything is ever left in my car I try my best to return it to owner, but sometimes it's not possible to work out who's it was or where they came from ect.

In this case I just put the item in my glove box, just incase if get asked on the rank if anyone has found a whatever.

I also normally put a post on Facebook and tag other drivers/local companies in the post etc.

Just so people are aware of what I've found if they get asked.

Not sure where you live as I'm on my phone and can't see, but might be worth popping down the local taxi rank/the one you got picked up from last night and just having a word with a few of the lads.

Thanks for that John, rank I used only operates in evenings so I might have a stroll down tonight and ask around, see what happens. Thanks for the pointer.

No bother mate, I would say 99% of us are honest and would always try to return people's items to them.

You could try giving local police station a call as well, I've handed bank cards and wallets/purses into ours before when they've had no is with address on in them

if you dont get the keys back you can use vagcom to unsync the key from the central locking which means it can still be unlocked and started but its not just a matter of walking along pressing the button untill a car unlocks for them.

Thanks for that Wilson, having taken Johns advice (Thanks John) I now have a Taxi number and am currently hanging around the rank looking dodgy in the hope he shows up. Should just be a matter of time, if nothing else I should be able to contact him through the Taxi office on Monday.

let me know how you get on. I'm only in Clayton West & a forum sponsor!

Also dealers aren't the only people capable of programming/deleting keys! My sig gives away what i do for a living ;)

Thanks for that actionman but following JohnSTV6's advice I managed to track down the taxi and get my keys back. Relieved to say the least, and the taxi drivers were all very helpful!

that's good news! Went to a wedding in Marsden on Saturday night & my mate lost his only key card for his Megane. He thinks it fell out out of his pocket in the taxi but he doesn't know the taxi companies name. The taxi they got in turned out not to be from the company they booked it with. He's spent last 2 days trying to get in touch with people that booked taxi from the wedding but hasn't had any luck so i'm going over tomorrow to do him 2 new cards!

Pleased to hear you got them back mate

Thanks guys. The taxi drivers were great and once I came across one that had heard about the keys being found they got a message to the driver for me and he brought the keys to me. The driver wasn't sure which of a few drops the keys belonged to but was very helpful once he new. I got keys back and he got a few quid for his troubles and everyone was happy.

Nice to see you give him a few quid aswell, it's amazing the amount of people who won't do that.

And although it's never expected/the reason to return someone's items.

It's always nice to feel like it's appreciated when you go out of your way to bring something back/drop it off at their house etc.

Some people just grunt and shut the door in your face :-(

Well, he went out of his way to bring the keys to me so the least I could do was drop him a few quid for his time and fuel.
