Help picking my helmet

Featured Replies

After seeing the guys flying round Blyton I really wanted to have a go myself in the future. But I don't have a helmet of my own so need to purchase one.

I have tried my mates on and it was a Large. Are they sized similarly? So his large fitted me therefore I should be looking for a large too?

I have been looking at these two one eBay. Can anyone give some advice on what the requirements are and if either of these two meet those requirements.

Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest considering an open face style, much more comfortable for occasional track use.

You could also rent until you know you will get your money's worth from a helmet

I've got an Uber lid like in your link.

I bought it for the mrs to see if she liked being on the back before we bought

her a full set of proper kit of her own. Having ACU gold means that you can use it on a bike trackday

so plenty good enough for car.

I also have a track day lid for in car but that's open face.

A visor isn't necessary in a vehicle with a closed cockpit/cabin and

will only steam up on a cheap lid if you have it down.

If you have it up then why have one at all?

You need to spend a few bob before you get into the leagues of

lids with pinlock visors.

Better off with one of these. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Duchinni-D506-Gloss-White-Open-Face-fibreglass-Motorcycle-Crash-Helmet-Bargain-/281307450404?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Helmets&var=&hash=item417f3b0c24

Fibreglass as well which is way better than polycarbonate.

This is CHEAP for fibreglass.... A bargain.

Thanks for the advise guys. I see what you mean about the open face helmets. They look much more suitable. Although I do like the look of some of the open face helmets that still have visors.

In theory helmet sizes are the same across manufacturers but I found that the shape can differ a bit, so you're best to try them on. How about going to a helmet shop and trying some on from different brands?

I have tried full face helmet and found it to be poor for visibility, the visor plays games with light and reflection from the windscreen, I guess you could pay big money and buy a polarised visor?

Or, like me, get yourself a reputable helmet, after all it is there to protect your head if the unthinkable were to happen.

Think I've settled on this one. I think it's similar/same as the one linked by grr666 but black in colour. What do you think?

Nice I like it.

Needs a punisher skull though....

4 advantages of fibreglass over polycarbonate

1, Lighter than Polycarbonate

2, Tougher (abrasion resistance)

3.You can safely put stickers on it or paint it without worry

of degradation so you can pimp that badboy :)

4. Glass fibre normally has about double the lifespan of a polycarbonate lid

Usually 5+ years compared to 2-3 of polycarbonate.

(replacement required due to UV degradation over time)

Good point.  Polycarbonate is damaged by a lot of things including household cleaners, such as washing up liquid.

That's a mighty fine looking helmet :giggle:

Does it need regular polishing? :giggle:

I'll get me coat!

Going to get it bought on payday. Then all I need is a new clutch and I'll be able to join in the track fun.

I bought one of these:

http://www.blackcatracewear.com/os2010-snell-2010-open-face-helmet.html

Car specific, Snell approved and flameproof. Yes, it's more expensive than some motorcycle helmets and some car helmets which are not Snell approved but is better specification and is the kind of item you can get years and years of use out of.

Soooooooooooo much innuendo in the title of this...

Good Luck getting sensible answers.  Maybe Auric, Brimma and Lee etc. won't see this thread.

just seen this. :D So many missed opportunities :(
