I'm  looking for a MK2 Octavia VRs. I'm not sure whether 125TDi or 147TSi yet and it will probably depend on what comes up. One local car I've spotted is a 2011 with 55000Km. I would prefer 2012 or 2013 but they're not very common in liftback. 

I've checked http://www.skoda.com.au/my-skoda/capped-price-service and it seems that the 4th service is very expensive with a DSG gearbox (about $400 more than with a manual) at $940 for the diesel and $1100 for the petrol. Please can someone tell me what the service includes?

Australia has fixed 15,000km service intervals & if you intend to keep the car for a while then you'd be smart to do them at 7500km (heat & excessive short trips/urban driving).

 

The 60,000km service is an expensive one, esp at the dealer as it includes DSG oil/filter & a few other things.  You'd be wise to find a good independent VW specialist as you aren't obliged to go to the dealer to maintain warranty.

 

What part of AUS are you as we both know it's only a small place..

 

There's a reasonable AU contingent at VWwc that can probably provide more info than these fine British chaps at Briskoda

 

edit:  I doubt a 2011 is eligible for capped priced service either, so you are at the mercy of our very greedy dealers.

Thanks Brad, yeah i realise its out of capped price servicing but i figured it wouldn't be too far off. I'm still interested to know exactly what they service on the gearbox for that extra $400 or if it is just the oil and filter(s) changed.  I think its also out of warranty as a 2011 so i wouldn't be worried about going to an independent. There's a couple of VAG specialists in Adelaide where i am so i'll have a look for mentions on VWwc. I was also thinking of seeing if there'd take a look over a car when i'm ready to buy.

A DSG service is simply an oil and filter* change.

 

I appreciate the time scales will be different over in Australia for good reason but this UK link is good to see what is actually done during a service.

 

Note that most of the items on the more expensive major service are only changed "if required", which is very infrequently, so the it is nearly always more cost effective to go for the cheaper minor servce and add bits as you need them...

It's just oil & filter.  The oil costs a bomb & they like to bend you over because people think it's a really hard job (it isn't).

 

Yes, there's at least one good bricks & mortar specialist in ADL & also there's a Czech guy called Miro with a mobile business.  He's not cheap but he's thorough & knows his stuff although I feel he tends to over-service slightly (better than missing stuff I guess).  Miro can do pre-purchase inspections.  He's known as Transporter at VWwc - private message him.

 

Basically, what they've done in AUS is apply the same service schedule to all variants.  I think this is to reduce the amount of thinking that the mechs & service advisors have to do (I've done both jobs so feel I can throw manure at them as much as i like). eg: Spark plugs are changed at 60,000km no matter what where-as the "proper schedule has some at 90k & others at 60k.

 

Silver 1011:  I agree with you but they wouldn't do it like that down here.  They rarely do "Inspect & replace if required" - mainly "at this mileage or time, replace no matter how good it looks".   AU motorists aren't as knowlegable or enthusiastic about their cars (they're more into the badge & paint colour) so you have to dumb it down for them or they get confused, have a temper tantrum & spit the dummy.
