Turbo Noise police siren

Featured Replies

Hiya,

Seems to be debate about if the 'police siren' turbo noise is normal or not.

Mine is like this

http://youtu.be/d_8j17Ce2AU

Is t likely my turbo is on it's way out? Is this louder than normal?

I forgot to put the windows down when recording but gives an idea on how loud it is.

Does sound noisy that, how many miles is on it?

Seems a fairly normal noise level to be honest unless its not getting picked up that well on the video.

Has it got noisier recently?

sounds like bearings in the turbo are worn. Mine does the same thing but louder, it only seems to do it when the car is warm (thinner oil). Its heartbreaking when the wife drives off after dropping me off somewhere its all i can hear all the way up the road. its the next thing on me list to do, just done a/c condensor and had a coolant hose burst :( .

ive just done short of 100k and its mapped so cant complain

I've only had the car a few weeks and picked it up like that.

It happens from cold and also when warmed up too, although maybe not as loud when warmed up. I'll need to pay more attention to see if it goes quieter.

Cars done 112k miles.

If the bearings are gone, does that mean a whole new turbo?

Thanks for replies.

Mine was like that for well over 40,000 miles before it eventually failed, never got any louder either.

My turbo has also sounded similar to that ( had it 20k miles now ) and got a lot louder once I got a dpf delete and straight through exhaust plus stage 1.

To me it's normal, it's turbo spool.

Doesn't sound that bad to me either. Mine's similar with DPF delete and remap.

This is when you want to worry.....

I wonder then if the DPF has been deleted...

I asked the previous owner, he reckons no, but this Octy is a lot faster than my Leon FR 170 I had. It also chucks out a bit of black smoke every now and again and smells pretty diesely too.

My 1.9 BKC golf sounded like yours for 100,000 miles before I sold it.

I can't hear any untoward noises at all in the first video . When my turbo was failing it was most noticeable on acceleration and deceleration. Just like the old air raid sirens on top of the police boxes, a bit deeper note than the VW video. Maybe you are too young to remember the nuclear war air raid drills in the 50's and 60's? The sirens did look a bit like open sided turbos.

The funny thing is mine is exactly like that and the amount of people that get in and says the police are behind you
