servicing question.

Featured Replies

As the title says really. I've got a pre fl vrs tfsi on variable servicing and a reminder in the

dash says it's due a service in 20 days. This would put the milage between 69-70,000 miles, but what service would be done at this interval? Thanks in advance.

We really need to see what the previous service history has been. Has it been set to variable from new?

The basics will be oil and filter, nothing else (aside from basic visual checks).

The extra's required may include fuel, air and pollen filter. Since your vRS is a petrol you can add spark plugs to the list too. These are only changed infrequently, the required intervals are mileage and time related and are detailed in the service book in the glovebox.

Brake fluid renewal is every three years.

Does the TFSI have a cambelt or chain?

pre-fl vRS is belt

I've been told by two main-dealers now that every service on variable is classed as a major one.

So you either flip/flop between minor and major every 10,000? on fixed or have a major every 16,000 - 20,000 on variable.

But as Skoda dealerships can vary so much in advice, would not surprise me at all if someone now posts something different.

Major service is a rip off. If you read the list, you don't get anything more than the minor. They will always do the full inspection anyway to try find more work. If they don't, they wouldn't have done it on a major anyway as its unprovable.

Officially yes. A long life or variable service is classed as a major or £259 service.

As Huskoda rightly points out though is that anyone paying for a major service before approx. 60,000 miles / 3 years is paying far more than neccessary.

The reason is because the extra's included on a major service (air, pollen, fuel filter and spark plugs) that are used to justify the higher price are only fitted "if required". The problem is they rarely are required.

This means people are paying for a £259 variable service and getting a £139 minor service. Not good. Skoda get away with it due to all the confusion.

I actually had an argument with Skoda UK to reinstate the detail behind each of the two services on their website after it was removed - an obvious attempt to hide the issues highlighted above...

My advice:

- Pay for the £139 oil and filter (minor) service.

- Add the air, fuel and pollen filter as when required as per the service book in the glovebox.

- Ensure the dealer resets to the service indicator to variable (long life) not fixed (10,000 miles or 12 months).

- Save £££'s.
