Maybe our resident Policemen can enlighten us if ANPR is active in BP garages and Tesco stores.  If it is not the case at the moment I bet it will be in the near future.

ANPR are not CCTV cameras, they just read number plates.   I also don't like the idea of zillions of cameras watching our every move.

Yup, well aware of that.  My point was that compared with just about anywhere else in the world, the proliferation of cameras, be that ANPR, CCTV or whatever makes one feel like a prisoner in your own country...constantly under surveillance of one description or another.  Whatever we think about it, our freedoms are being curtailed bit by bit by bit.  The usual "well if you're a law abiding citizen you have nothing to fear" doesn't wash.  Its more Orwellian here by the year.  I can see the point of ANPR and it's a good thing for the police as a very useful tool in their arsenal against illegal motorists.  Its just we can't drive anywhere these days without the constant eyes of CCTV, speed cameras and other surveillance marking our every move.
